The Kudroli Sri Gokarnanatha Kshetra, located in the heart of Mangaluru, is one of the grandest temples in coastal Karnataka. Dedicated to Lord Gokarnanatha (Shiva), the temple was consecrated in 1912 by social reformer Sri Narayana Guru, who opened its doors to all devotees irrespective of caste – making it a landmark of equality and devotion.
The temple is built in the Chola-style of architecture with a majestic Rajagopura adorned with intricate carvings and golden embellishments. The premises glow beautifully at night, especially during festivals when the entire temple complex is lit up. The walls and halls are decorated with murals depicting stories from Hindu scriptures.
Along with Lord Gokarnanatha (Shiva), the temple also houses shrines dedicated to Goddess Annapoorneshwari, Lord Subramanya, Lord Ganapathi, and the Navagrahas. The temple is also well-known for Annadanam (free meals) served daily to devotees.
The temple comes alive during the grand celebration of Mangaluru Dasara (Navaratri). Decorated idols, tableaux, tiger dance troupes, and a grand procession attract thousands of devotees and tourists. It is often called the Mysuru Dasara of Coastal Karnataka.
