6 ways to map LGBTQ+ friendly places for Sydney WorldPride

WorldPride is a global LGBTQ+ festival celebrated in different cities every few years. This year, Sydney will be the first city in the Southern Hemisphere to host the big event with over 100,000 people expected to attend between February 17 and March 5.

In honor of Sydney WorldPride, we’ve rounded up six ways you can support the LGBTQ+ community through Google Maps. Read on to also learn about some amazing Local Guides that put LGBTQ+ friendly places on the map.

1. Update place features including “LGBTQ+ friendly” and “Transgender safe space”

You can do this in three simple steps:

  1. Find a Business Profile on Google Maps mobile.
  2. Select About in the tabs bar, then tap Edit features (for Android) or Update this place (for iOS).
  3. Scroll to Crowd, tap on the descriptions, and submit.

2. Review LGBTQ+ owned and friendly spaces

“I think it’s important [to add contributions about LGBTQ+ spaces] because people visiting Sydney and young people who may be coming out can find LGBTQ+ businesses and safe places to hang out,” says Local Guide @GeoffCutler69 from Sydney. Geoff regularly reviews gay bars, venues, and events. He also notes when other businesses, like this hotel, are inclusive.

3. Create lists of LGBTQ+ friendly places

“I’m a big fan of reviewing LGBTQ+ places in my home town in London and any time I am abroad. I created a list of ten welcoming gay spaces in London. When I meet people on a night out, I often send them my list, and they are really grateful for a local’s perspective,” shares @danieldreimer , a 2020 Inclusive Mapper. Daniel has also put together a helpful list of LGBTQ+ charities in London and shared his experience at Pride parades throughout Europe here on Connect.

4. Add places and services related to the LGBTQ+ community

“People around the world can add LGBTQ+ welfare organizations with their contact details on Google Maps, so if anyone is seeking help, they can easily get in touch. [You] can also add shelters for LGBTQ+ community members and offices of lawyers who handle LGBTQ+ cases,” says @Shaheen_Gul from Karachi, a 2022 Helpful Hero. Shaheen is a passionate advocate for transgender rights and has hosted a knowledge sharing session for the transgender community in Pakistan, teaching them how to contribute on Google Maps and navigate to safe spaces.

5. Add photos and videos of places associated with the LGBTQ+ community

“I like adding reviews as it allows me to provide both images and videos of LGBTQ+ safe spaces,” shares @martygm from Santo Domingo. Martiña is a 2021 Inclusive Mapper who loves drag shows and sees mapping LGBTQ+ places as a way to help others find a “‘safe haven’ where they least expect it.”

6. Tell business owners about the “LGBTQ+ friendly” attribute

Verified merchants in most territories can opt-in to show that they are an LGBTQ+ friendly business on their Business Profiles. This attribute will appear on a business’s profile on Google Maps and Search — helping them stand out to customers and providing another way for the LGBTQ+ community to find safe spaces.

If you own an LGBTQ+ friendly business, check out this tutorial video to learn how to add the attribute to your Business Profile.

Thanks for your post about WorldPride 2023 and timely encouragement of supporting the LGBTQ+ community through Google Maps @TiffanyBnyc . As you have shown, there are a number of ways of supporting the LGBTQ+ community through Google Maps. For example, simply noting when a business is inclusive is so easy to do.

Yes “this year, Sydney [Australia] will be the first city in the Southern Hemisphere to host the big event” and, joined by the foreign affairs minister, Penny Wong, the first openly gay woman in parliament, Anthony Albanese will become the first sitting Australian PM to march in the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

Well done @GeoffCutler69 , @danieldreimer , @Shaheen_Gul and @martygm on your inclusive mapping contributions.

Happy Sydney WorldPride!

It’s great to know that this year Pride month is going to start from Sydney Australia. Maybe I can’t express it very well but I’m so excited just imagining when I will follow all the news and posts of pride months from all around the world. Because unfortunately neither can I attend this parade, nor i can celebrate this pride publicly here in my country.
Thank you Local Guides team and @TiffanyBnyc for featuring me in this post. This is a big honor to me.
Sending love to whole community especially my dearest LGBTQ+ community members.

Thank you @TiffanyBnyc for sharing this post ! I too believe that Love is Love and we must treat all with love and respect ! Here is my post which shares Ways to make Maps contributions helpful to the LGBTQ community I remember me and friend @AdrianLunsong had co-hosted a fun Pride friendly Maps virtual meet . Although I am not a part of the LGBTQ+ community , I try my best to mention or list down or save a place if I come across and see that its friendly and inclusive to all. Here is one such list I had made to support the Pride community : Pride-friendly Brighton, UK.

Please pay attention to where you post here on Connect. How to choose a section/topic for your Connect post might also be interesting for you. A new post in the How-to section would be the best place for your issue.

You may also find the following post from my Easing frustrations series interesting and helpful:

Basically, you can not add a phone number if it is not publicly listed under the same business name and address as mentioned on Google Maps. Also, prepaid numbers are not good.

Cheers

Sydney World Pride was so much fun. I shared a little post about my experience HERE as well as a short video HERE from the very last day of the celebration when I joined over 50,000 people in an historic walk across the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge for the Sydney World Pride March.
