6 Best ways to contribute in MAPS and Connect in Lockdown (You can Do it too!!!)

Hello LG friends,

Today I am going to share my story behind how I spend my local guide life in the lock-down situation.

I have been in lock down since last 2 months; but I have not shut down myself from the world. Rather it was actually a great opportunity for me to be involved more in MAPS and Connect forum.

Without much a do, let’s see the ideas that I have pointed out regarding what I am doing now and will be doing in the future-

  1. Remote Office : I am doing my office for the last 2 months remotely. Thanks to my local ISP, since they are the hero to me for giving me uninterrupted internet service. I am able to be online 24x7.

  2. Online Learning/certification - There are many online portals from which I chose 3 portals for keeping me update. These are related to my professional field, Online learning related to contribution in MAPS and lastly the Covid-19, corona related awareness.

  3. Bangladesh Challenge : I have worked actively in special emergency work as a local guiding for Bangladesh. In #BangladeshChallenge, with the participation of all, contributor like me added information to Google Maps or Open Street Maps in all parts of Bangladesh. It mostly focused on nearby information of hospitals, pharmacies, Flexi/Recharge/Cash Points and many more. Expert mappers assisted the contributors. This map will be used to deliver emergency food, medicine or products to government or aid agencies. The organizer provide training and digital certificates for everyone. They will give a special gifts for the top 100 contributors after a while.

  4. Meet Ups (Join & Organize):It was a blessings for me that in this lock-down, I have the opportunity to join and organize meet-ups. I have attended 18 virtual meet-ups organize by dynamic LGs around the world. It was a great learning for me. I have learned new things and understand what are the best ways to contribute in connect and MAPS. I have done a significant contribution from home in this lock-down situation. Also I had arranged my very first virtual meet-up on Hidden Gems of Maps & Connect . It was a great learning session for us.

  5. __MAPS :__Well, it is really difficult contributing from home, as I usually enrich the maps in live location. But I have improvised the situation. I have also done the following things to enrich the MAPS-

  6. Giving reviews of the places which I already visited. As well as edit the poor reviews that I had submitted long time ago.

  7. Uploaded pictures which I have captured just before the lock down.

  8. Add places of local businesses around my home.

  9. Remove private places around my home.

  10. Edit Names, address, phone numbers etc. that I have known.

  11. Answered many questions that I have already known about my visited places.

Beside the contribution, I have traveled so many places virtually in MAPS.

6__. Local Guides Connect :__It was really a great opportunity for me to explore more deeply about connect. I have come to understand how all the sections works. I have read articles written by LG, Connect moderators and Google Moderators. I have written some posts and continuously giving time in connect. I have also shared my experience about connect in many meet-ups.

As I said, you can also do the same as I have done. I bet that surely you will understand that you are spending the lock-down time wisely.

In the end, I have a question/comment for you.

How are you spending time in MAPS or Connect?

Also share your best experience in this lock-down situation.

Waiting for your comment.

Hi @ShakilAK

Thanks for sharing. I’m happy to see that you started organizing meet-ups also.

I have spent most of my lockdown time working on a new online course called Better Pics for Google Maps targeted at Local Guides.

Cheers

My thinkings are the same as you shared here. Exploring Maps, joining Meet-Ups, and active on connect and of course developing skills are really all great ways to pass this time.
