5 tips to continue contributing on Google Maps from your home

As many other Local Guides in other countries, in Switzerland :switzerland: we must stay at home because It’s dangerous with the corona virus for the moment.

I want to share with you 5 tips to continue contributing on google maps with your computer or your smartphone from home.

1. Check the facts : make the maps even more authentic

There is an easy way to change and verify places information from Google Chrome on a computer.

Go on : https://www.google.com/maps/

Clic on the left of the search bar and clic on Your contributions. You will see you Local Guides profile.

Clic on Check the fact

Which information is easy to verify or add from home ?

Website : you can check by Google chrome if the website is really existing and if it’s consistent with the company’s business.

Category : You can pretty quickly deduce if the category is correct by analyzing the place’s page

Statut : Businesses may have the status of temporarily closed on Google Maps. In Switzerland, all non-essential shops are closed. Help these establishments to inform of their temporary closure more quickly by validating this status.

2. Add pictures you hadn’t published yet

Sometimes we take pictures and forget to publish them. This is a good time to look pics in your smartphone and publish them.

3. Add comments on places where you only put stars or increase the quality of your comments.

When I started the local guide program, I only put stars. This is my chance to change and add a review.

More useful informations your review contains and how you share your experience, more it will be help the community. Feel free to check your reviews and change them if the situation has changed.

4. Adding specifics informations about accessibility

Since begining of 2020, I’m trying to find out even more about whether places are accessible to everyone and what kind of accessibility they have.

On the official websites of place, you can sometime find infos about accessibility and update on Google Maps easily !

I’m lucky because in my region, the tourist office has created a website dedicated on the accessibility informations of the most famous places!

Update accessibility informations from your smartphone :

  1. Select a place

  2. Go on the About tab

  3. Clic on Describe this place button

  4. Add what it is missing.

5. Create news lists from place you know or like

You can find here all information from Google support to create a list here .

I was often helped by lists that I could use abroad. Here the idea is to create theme lists.

Here some exemples.

Food : Best burger in town / Veggie restaurant with small price / Local specialties to eat here

Sport : Where to play Basketball outside / Fun activities for young and old

How about you? How do you contribute from home? Have you other tips to share ? Feel free to comment.

Yes @JanVanHaver ! I’m using functions that I didn’t use very much. That’s pretty positive!

I agree @christophesubilia ! I’m taking the opportunity to correct some information that makes Maps a little crowded like the name of the activities in which the owner put everything like description of the activity.

@christophesubilia Great post and ideas, my friend. It’s good nowadays to be an active Local Guide, despite the lockdown, it helps us to forget at least for a while about this crazy mess.

Thanks @christophesubilia for writing this post. I needed to get out of my ‘pause mode’ :point_right: Are the Local Guides in pause mode?

On the other hand, I had always wondered if uploading photos or commenting on the places I had been in a long time ago could have any repercussions.

Thanks once again!

Hi @christophesubilia ,

This is an informative post which you shared. I’ve been following some of these tips from past many days - almost when the lockdown started.

Here, I would like to add one more tip - Editing places. We can see many duplicate places on Google Maps - so, I think editing work we can do now. I’m also reporting wrong pictures which don’t belong to that particular place.
