Situated right in front of the Mahabaleshwara Temple, the Sri Maha Ganapati Temple is one of the most revered shrines in Gokarna. Dedicated to Lord Ganesha, this temple holds immense significance as it is closely linked with the legendary story of the Atmalinga.
When Ravana was carrying the Atmalinga from Mount Kailash, the gods feared its misuse. Lord Ganesha, disguised as a young Brahmin boy, cleverly tricked Ravana into placing the Atmalinga on the ground at Gokarna. Once placed, it became immovable, and Ravana’s efforts to uproot it failed. This ensured that the Atmalinga remained in Gokarna permanently, blessing devotees for generations.
