Experience the Magic of Taiwan’s Hot Air Balloon Festival — Only in Taitung!

If you’re looking for an unforgettable travel experience in Asia, Taiwan’s International Hot Air Balloon Festival is a true hidden gem. Held every summer at the scenic Luye Highland (鹿野高台) in Taitung County, this vibrant event is filled with color, creativity, and natural beauty — and 2025 brings some very special surprises you won’t want to miss.

I filmed a complete timelapse video of a hot air balloon setup and launch—from inflation to takeoff to landing and deflation. Watch it here:

:balloon: This Year’s Global First: Doraemon and Hello Kitty Balloons!

2025 marks a historic first for balloon fans: for the first time ever, the world’s first and only officially licensed Doraemon hot air balloon is flying—only at Luye Highland in Taitung! This adorable blue balloon, representing Japan’s beloved robotic cat, made its global debut right here in Taiwan. It’s not available anywhere else in the world, making Taitung the destination for Doraemon fans.

But that’s not all. You’ll also find another global exclusive: the Hello Kitty Indigenous Balloon, featuring Hello Kitty dressed in traditional Taiwanese Bunun tribe clothing. This unique balloon celebrates Taiwan’s indigenous culture with a creative and heartwarming design — and yes, it’s also one-of-a-kind in the world.

These two special balloons are just part of the reason the 2025 festival is so extraordinary.

:national_park: Clean Air, Blue Skies, and Breathtaking Views

What makes Taitung the perfect place for hot air balloons? Aside from its peaceful rural charm, Taitung has some of the cleanest air in all of Taiwan. With no air pollution, clear blue skies, and fluffy white clouds, the balloons shine even more brightly against the natural beauty of the East Rift Valley. Photographers and drone pilots love the region for its perfect lighting and stunning backdrops.
