10 Years with Local Guides: From a Textile Graduate to Empowering Women Through Local Guides Community

My journey with Google Local Guides began in 2016, and over the last nine years, it has shaped not only how I explore places—but also who I am today.

I am a textile graduate, currently working as a Product Development and Sourcing Specialist at a German retail brand, C&A. Before joining this multinational company, I worked in a large local garment manufacturing organization with over 20,000 workers, where nearly 60% were women, yet leadership remained largely male-dominated.

Despite challenges, I grew into a front-end merchandiser handling costing, negotiation, planning, and order confirmations. One defining moment was delivering a major presentation in front of senior management as the most junior employee—something that once felt impossible. What helped me build that confidence?

How My Local Guides Journey Began

I joined Local Guides through a map-making event, where I met @MahabubMunna bhai, whose dedication inspired me. Contributing to Maps taught me the value of sharing honest experiences to help people I had never met.

Gradually, I became an active member of the Bangladesh Local Guides community. Meetups became my learning space, helping me build confidence, communication skills, and leadership. I even met @SoniaK strengthening my connection to the global community.

Growing into Leadership and Impact

Over time, Local Guides became the platform where my professional journey and passion for women empowerment intersected.

Dear @FarhanaRupa,

Congratulations on reaching an extraordinary milestone! Your dedication to empowering women through the Local Guides community has created a ripple effect, inspiring others to share their voices, support local businesses, and navigate the world with confidence and independence.

C&A is one of the most recognizable fashion retailers in Portugal, having significantly expanded across the mainland and the islands. I’m glad and proud to know that C&A sources its ready-made clothing from Bangladesh.

I wish you all the best!

@Roman_Ahmmed thank you brother!

You would be happy to know that C&A sources almost 50%+ products across all categories from Bangladesh. And i am solely dedicated for Heavy knits. So yeah, whatever women/young fashion sweater you would find in the store, please know, all of them was developed by me :upside_down_face::upside_down_face::upside_down_face:

Hi @FarhanaRupa,

Thank you for sharing!

To keep the community organized. I am removing the “Gallery” tag from your topic as they do not fit with what you shared. The “Gallery” tag is perfect if you want to share about your experience at an art gallery in your hometown or a new place.

Please note, using the right tags and categories on your topics makes it easier for other Local Guides to find what they’re looking for in the community.
