10 impressive photos of modern architecture

Modern architecture buildings come in all shapes, sizes, and materials, and photographing them is a way to present things from a unique perspective. Therefore, planning is key if you are considering doing an architecture photo shoot. Before taking photos of your favorite building, take a closer look at it from all directions to get a better idea from where you wish to capture it. Also, think of the time of the day and the weather conditions — they play an important role as well.

Explore different angles

Bringing in your own perspective is fundamental to making your photos stand out. Take the time to move around the building and find an interesting point of view. Photographing taller buildings like skyscrapers from below helps minimize distortion. This perspective also makes a structure look more dominating. If you are looking down on a building, you can emphasize the shapes.

Find your light

When doing architecture photography, light can add drama, details, or create flattering lines. Getting the perfect shot means finding the right light, whether you want to capture a silhouette, a night photo, or an outline against a blue sky. On the other hand, shadows can bring depth to your photo.

Lines, shapes, and patterns

In addition to the size of the building, another important thing to consider are the shapes and lines. Diagonal lines create a feeling of movement, horizontal lines create a sense of calm, and vertical lines create a sense of power or growth. Glass buildings can give you a chance to create reflections, bringing depth to your photo.

Oh do I ever like architecture photography @DanniS and I love, love, love this great post. Congratulations to all the featured Local Guides, what great photos. The Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku, Azerbaijan (Zain Alzaidy), Museum of Tomorrow in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil (Pavlos Euthymiou), Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain (Fernando Garcia) and the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing, China (Julien Neree) are especially appealing to me. I’ve seen and taken many photographs myself of VIA 57th West (Chaim Poper). It stands out in that area of in New York City! I have to say that the Lotus Temple in New Delhi, India (Ankur Bagai) very much reminds me of the famous Sydney Opera House designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon. I’d particularly like Danish architecture. The landmark Tromsdalen Church, also known as Ishavskatedralen (The Arctic Cathedral) designed by Norwegian architect Jan Inge Hovig is another lovely building!

@AdamGT your photos of the Opera House are stunning, very clear and focus. Mine was so blurred and especially when I took it at night. Not clear at all!

@DanniS This is Negeri Sembilan State Museum, Malaysia

The Museum building itself was built using the Minangkabau architecture. The building known as Teratak Pepatih Building was previously used as a location for the National Al-Quran Recitation Competition. Due to its Minangkabau architecture, it was renovated and officially declared as the new location of the state museum on 14 July 1986.
