So I do a fair bit of browsing of google maps. This usually happens when I am trying to get directions and then notice something interesting and get information on it then find something connected and so on and so forth.
In fact, this is how I ended up being a Local Guide. I was just looking for restaurant suggestions one day and noticed that some reviewers' pictures had a weird icon next to them, I clicked on their profile - and voila! The wardrobe opened into Narnia.
Anyway, I'm digressing. One trick I have found useful while looking for spammy/ incorrectly marked places is to toggle to the terrain view.
If it doesn't match, you know you've got to fix the marker.
Today I found a phantom place in a water body just because of this. It did not even have a valid address!
I wonder who these notorious map bandits are who create such places.

Those map bandits are like the ones that submit numeric ratings & one or two word reviews for places they have never been. No ethical standards.

I agree!
