Re: Shobha Bazar PhotoWalk

It was around the end of the sixteenth century, when the Mughals were still ruling Delhi and Portugese had just started exploring the marshlands of the great Ganga-Brahmaputra River delta, the businessman families around the prosperous city of Betore established the village of Sutanuti to extend their profit on the opposite side of the Ganges river south to Chitpur.

Later, Job Charnock, the representative of the British East India company, set his foot on the crowded ghat of Sutanuti in the year 1690 (by then, the rights to this property was transferred to the Roy Choudhury family of Barisha), and the rest is history! Sutanuti gradually evolved as the core northern spectrum of the city of Kolkata (Calcutta), the then capital of India.

From Mohun Bagan beating the strong East Yorkshire F.C. in I.F.A. Shield 1911 finale, to the renowned freedom fighters settling their base camps with the target to remove the occupiers from the root - this North Calcutta settlement saw history to be built. Even today's phenomenal fight between the states of West Bengal and Odisha based on the G.I. tag for 'Rosogolla' got solved with the victory of Bengal, thanks to the originators of this sweet, Nabin Chandra Das & Sons, a sweet shop at Rajballavpara.

So, on the coming Sunday, i.e., on 24th December 2017, let's meet up at our event (unofficial photo walk) Shobha Bazar PhotoWalk under the banner of West Bengal Local Guides, a platform for all the Google Local Guides contributors of this state, and explore through the heritage allies of Sovabazar, Hatibagan, Shyambazar, Baghbazar Ghaat, Kumortuli to capture the traditions on camera which North Kolkata never forgets.

Please reach the Gate No. 1 of Sobhabazar Sutanuti Metro Station (facing the Grey Street-CR Avenue crossing) by noon sharp on the mentioned date, and make this Christmas eve a memorable one.
