It is always annoying that changing a review or even only removing an outdated photo causes Google Maps to assume, the review relates to a very recent visit. The same applies, if you want to write review now, which was forgotten soon after the visit.
For quite a while, I was wondering why I don't get the pull-down for setting year and month of visit anymore, until I noticed it is indeed still possible for all places I ever visited in France, but not for any place in any of the countries between Germany and Italy.
I'd appreciate very much having this possibility for all reviews.
Did anybody see this for places in other countries besides France?

@MortenCopenhagen just give it a try, if the option appears for you too: https://maps.app.goo.gl/o71cGX1wGPxfbfAn6

@MortenCopenhagen reg. "It not really dates but month + year."
Yes, I shall correct my post above. It is also consistent with the photos and absolutely correct, since the exact date date of visit should not go public.

@TerryPG reg " Do you think this is a European thing?"
From my experience, this works only for (all?) places in France. But at least 6-8 years ago, that I first saw it, at the time believing it was a general feature for all. Then wondering, why it "disappeared", until I found out it depends on the country, where the pin is. Certainly not enforced by EU, but possibly by the French government.
Anyway, I ask why not everywhere?
Just wondering @claude_richard , can you confirm for all reviews to french places a time frame for the date of visit can be selected?

@WilfriedB Oui on peut sélectionner le mois et l'année de la visite
