Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary offers a stunning glimpse into an untouched evergreen forest located in the middle of lilongwe filled with diverse wildlife. From hyenas and Nile crocodiles to antelopes and various snakes including black mamba ,green maamba and python, the sanctuary is a haven for both carnivores and herbivores. The birds and monitor lizards add to the vibrant ecosystem.
The sanctuary's nature trails are simply breathtaking and provide the perfect setting for a peaceful walk through the forest. These trails are at their best in the early mornings at sunrise or in the late evenings at sunset. These times are not just magical due to the beautiful light, but they are also ideal for spotting wildlife, especially the nocturnal hyenas that start their day as the sun goes down. I went there at midday so spotting animals was tough but I loved the forest walk .Another highlight of the sanctuary is the river, which is dotted with numerous viewpoints where you can observe the crocodiles lounging by the water's edge or silently gliding through the water.It’s these moments—quiet, except for the gentle sounds of water and birds , that remind you of the raw beauty and power of nature.
Entry to the sanctuary is quite affordable at 1000 Malawi kwacha per person, which is equivalent to about 15 Zambian kwacha or 15 South African rands as of today.This small fee contributes to the conservation and maintenance of the sanctuary, ensuring that it remains a pristine natural haven.
While it's possible to explore the trails on your own, I highly recommend using a guide, especially since the paths aren't well-marked. It’s easy to get lost without someone familiar with the routes, and if you plan to visit during the evening, it's safer to have a guide with you due to the presence of nocturnal predators. If you're confident in your navigation skills and have a GPS, you might consider going solo during the day.
