I think most of us share a similar story. I used to be that excuse me guy as well. The problem people usually did not know. It even happened to me that I was standing at Freedom Square in Hradec Králové and asking people where is the Freedom Square and they did not know… :D. Later I found out it used to be called Lenin’s square and people were still using that name.
Anyway, the turning point for me was when one girl I was into told me a few years ago while we were traveling together: "Oh my god you are so prehistoric and old school that you do not even have a Google Maps on your phone. I started using Google Maps regularly shortly after :).
