Who will reach 2 billion photo views first?

I don’t think we’ll ever all be agreed on this. You say average views is an artificial metric, but how are the 14 million views any less artificial? I only have three photos over a million views, and of course they reached those numbers before the changes of February 2024. I cannot see up until now, why my Star Photo has 2 million views. It cannot possibly be real in the prevailing circumstances.

If we say the purpose of our contributions is to help other Google Maps users, closed businesses still on the map are not helpful. And the old views of our photos at those closed POIs are only contributing to a “badge of honour” as we call it.

But surely Terry and Morten aren’t going to be deleting anything with views before passing that 2 billion mark. Just like I didn’t delete anything with points while I was trying to conquer the final stretch to Level 10.

Talking about artificial ones @tony_b, I couldn’t help but congrats you on the 47’s badge you just have!

Parabéns @mortenCopenhagen e @TerryPG , gratificante ver esta competição proativa e com propósitos altruístas. Minhas medições indicam que chegarei a 0,5 B em um ano aproximadamente. Sigamos em frente!

Ah!! You lost me there for a moment. So yes, there are 47 thousand contributions, and 47 million views.

Nowhere near 2 billion though.

Not necessarily true. It is possible he is like me and removes Hidden photos? I just did what he did. Took my friend and I over 12 hours to compare photos and I deleted 18 million views which apparently were private. Stupid algorithm lol. After each 2 hour episode of comparison we took a nap. We were so tired.

Back to topic. Great friendly race to 2 billion. I think it will be close. Remember the video views seem to be uploading faster than stills, so… if Mort goes on a walkathon he will win. If not, my 2c is on Terry. Hehe.

Hi @everyone following this topic.

Yesterday, I wrote the following to Terry:

To compare the effects of a Cleanup after reaching 2B could look like this:

Delete all photos that are:

  • Uploaded MORE than 1 months ago
    and
  • Have LESS than 100 views

Also photos that does not belong to a place or belong to “Unknown place” should be deleted.

What do you think?

Terry agreed that I could share his reply:

I already purge on a monthly basis. It was much more stricter before the photo slowdown. Now it is like this;
After 3 months 0 views, out
6 months less than 1K views, out
9 months less than 2K views, out
1 Year Less than 3K views, out
Once a Year I would normally go thru all contributions and remove closed Poi’s or “Unknown place”
Not removing anything with views till I reach 2B

Any comments or suggestions on this?

Do you regularly purge non-perfirming photos? And what criteria do you use?

So it’s been 10 days Since @MortenCopenhagen originally posted this challenge. I agree that lately Video views are generating higher views than photo views, especially for me, My video views monthly are higher than my photo views.
I am garnering more views than Morten on a daily basis but based on the numbers I won’t have enough time to Catch Morten.

Based on my numbers Morten should cross 2 Billion views on Aug.9th and I should cross on Aug 12th.
These numbers are based on Google views from our profiles. Sorry I don’t have the actual numbers to share ( I was at a coffee shop and trying to do this on my phone.)
I will share actual numbers tomorrow .

I need another video to go Viral real quickly. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Congratulations. Based on your calculations, the gap is now narrower than when Morten calculated it earlier.

Yes, this is a very close race. The data on LGR confirms this.

So far in the month of July I see the following numbers of views:

Terry 7,561,349 (Updated 3 hours ago)
Morten 5,696,720 (Updated 7 hours ago)

When visiting LGR Terry is listed as number 57 while I’m number 56. There are arrows to browse between profiles so we are next door neighbors among 150K Local Guides. No matter who “wins” one thing is sure: Terry will take over my spot as #56 and I will drop to #57. The only question is whether it will happen before or after we reach 2 billion views.

Fingers crossed. It is so close.

PS here are the links to LGR:

I agree, @StevenBerlin. Every sport needs it’s spectators. I’m certainly not out on the field for this one.

Ok I’m closing a little but I will not have enough time. I generated a Bar graph to help see results a little easier.

Very nice @TerryPG. I tried to graph this a few days ago too, but I was too sleepy that night. We can still congratulate both of you, because you’re going where most of us can’t even dream of.

A nice race to watch! I can’t wait for next steps :hugs:

Hi @everyone,

Someone mentioned “Terry will win, unless Morten goes on a Photo walk to boost his numbers”. So I did :winking_face_with_tongue:!

Friday I went in my probably longest photo walk covering 3 smaller cities: Slangerup, Frederikssund, and Frederiksværk.

Some of you may have heard of the Copenhagen Jazz Festival. During the festival you could buy heavily discounted tickets for public transport. So I did. I also brought along my new electric bicycle.

This enabled my to take 377 new Storefront photos in just 12 hours on a very sunny day. Almost 5 of these hours were spend onboard public transport where you can bring your bike (it’s free on trains and busses). And I spend way too much time editing and uploading them over the weekend.

The success rate in getting my photos featured remains very high, but the populations of these cities is relatively small, so the views are not coming in as I’m used to. So I doubt this effort is going to be a decisive factor.

But I really enjoyed noticing how the mix of shops differs compared to Copenhagen.
An exorbitant amount of hairdressers and beauty parlors. Also, these 3 provincial cities have many more thai massage places and occult and alternative medicine providers. And banks are pretty much absent. Finally, I noticed a higher percentage of shops not being on Maps. So I added them, of cause.

I hope to make another post about the outcome of this photo walk. Not all 377 images were uploaded partly because the lighting conditions were harsh Sunlight. I prefer the Golder Hour a lot more.

Here is a quick selection of pics from Friday:

End of update.

It always amazes me when you speak of going on a photo walk. Fantastic result with those 377 photos in just a few hours. Whatever the final outcome of the 2 billion views race, you certainly have some good material to add to your collection. Very well done. :victory_hand:

It’s an understatement @tony_b and @MortenCopenhagen. “Photo Marathon” might be the better word

Since January 1, 2026, I posted 339 photos … less than Morten on a single day.

Seems to be a general trend. I haven’t seen any bank from inside since 16 years at least.

@WilfriedB @TerryPG @tony_b

I just did the manual checking and counting how the 377 photos performed. So I’m now ready to write up my report from the Photomarathon.

Only 343 of the 377 photos survived the editing and the upload procedure.

I noticed your photo walk @MortenCopenhagen and as usual congrats on getting so many featured photos, I contribute every day but do I need to go on another photo walk?

The updated bar graph is below and yes I am slowly catching up but I am running out of time. Gemini predicts that Morten will cross the 2 Billion mark on Aug 2nd, and myself on Aug 5th. Similar to what Morten predicted a few weeks ago.

Either way we are both doing what we love and enjoy, and are having FUN doing it.
