Top 100 Google Maps Local Guides Star Videos (December, 2024)

You are a good example and ambassador for the Leaderboards @Annaelisa. It is wise to always at least check to see if it updating is necessary.

Yes sparse! I got that sense of it when posting and totally agree that the Video leaderboard to should be far more active. I will try to investigate this.

OK that will help with my investigation @TerryPG. Not sure of the reason but will sort it out.

Yes @tony_b many of my photos are also stuck from one month to the next. Regarding video, I’m just wondering whether some are just finding it too difficult to find the star and hence not updating. If this is so then it’s a real shame and goes against us promoting and encouraging video on Maps.

I can image that some would have difficulty navigating the need to update their link to the album to the New Connect format. If anyone does have this difficulty then they can simply call out for help.

Someone previously suggested a way to find our videos and Star Video from among our photos.

For anyone who needs it:
Go to Your Contributions on the Google Maps page, choose the Photos tab, change sort order from Date to Views. Now scroll down a bit, then use Ctrl+F to start a search and type 0: in the search field. Hit enter and it should bring up your highest viewed video. Continue hitting Enter to see the other videos from highest to lowest.

I’m not convinced that this always works @tony_b. For example, where you say “scroll down a bit” what if you haven’t scrolled down past your star video, will this method still find it?

When you sort by views, everything is listed highest to lowest, so the first video you find will be your highest or Star video. But yes, you need to scroll far enough to be sure you’ve reached some videos. If the search finds none, you need to scroll some more.

For long-time contributors with thousands of high views photos dating back many years and who may have started videos more recently and get much less views than the photos, the videos will naturally be far down the list. I have slightly less than 1,000 media and when I sort by views my Star Photo is #1 with 2,137,896 views and my Star Video is #22 in my overall list with 190,884 views. I could possibly have found this visually without the search technique as my numbers are relatively small.

That’s the point I’m making Anthony. I believe you need to scroll at least to or past the star in order to be able to find it by this method and if you have been adding photos for years they will most likely have attracted many more views than the recently added videos pushing the videos a long way down the most views list. What this means is that for some, it will be near impossible to find the video stars. This I believe once again highlights a shortcoming of Maps; not having the filters needed for this sort of analysis.

You’re now rightfully back on the star video leaderboards @TerryPG and thank you for pushing so many including moi, down on the overall leaderboard as well as the level 10 and average views per day boards :scream: Not only that, you have dethroned @TiffanyStockstill at the top of average views per day board. I guess for that I have to congratulate you

@AdamGT , I haven’t had a chance to read each comment but congrats to @TerryPG on the dethroaning. :smiling_imp: Kidding

Yes the :imp: but it’s all fun Tiffany and makes the otherwise boring statistics a bit more interesting.

Thank you, I think @TiffanyStockstill  ( as Terry carefully looks over his shoulder)

I did notice what you accomplished after @JustJake passed you once for top edits in the U.S.A. (said Terry still looking over his shoulder)

No no, @TiffanyStockstill was the Queen of Avg Daily Views & 360s. It was @SamanthaSheehy who prompted an editing battle

The search for 0: (zero colon) trick using ‘Ctrl+F’ only works if it can find the search term on the currently visible page. This is searching for the time characters and wont find a video that is more than 1 minute long - this would require different search terms i.e. ‘1:’, ‘2:’. I’m pretty sure I have a couple that are more than a minute long.

I have uploaded over 1,200 videos and more than 8,000 still images. Scrolling through these can be limited by: your computers specification (at points the individual images may not show), your mouse function (some mice scroll more easily than others), physical fatigue (keep an eye for repetitive strain injury) - not forgetting how dull a task this can be! You also have to watch out for accidental click errors that can dump you right back at the start of the process.

I got my first positive result when my first video was about 10 away from being visible on my page.

It is safe to put the cursor in the search box and retry the search multiple times. I have scrolled my list and can see 359 results which suggests I am about 25% or so through my list. Even with the latest CPU, top spec graphics card, and 64GB RAM, This still causes performance issues - I don’t know that I would be able to scroll through the complete list yet.

After you have clicked to repeat the search you appear to start back at the beginning of the list i.e. 1 of 359 < >. If you click the right arrow you go to the next result ‘2’. However, if you click the left arrow you go to the end of the list ‘359’. From here you can continue to scroll through if that’s what you want.

Be aware that if you don’t take any action for 20 minutes the session might time out and you could end up having to start again.

Unfortunately the sphere indicator is an image which you can’t search for in the same way.

I still don’t understand why Google will not provide search, filter and sorting your submitted images - this seems like a more simple task than some of the other changes they have been making.

With 8,000 images and 1,200 videos, I’d pull up the POI to get my numbers at that point :anxious_face_with_sweat:

Unfortunately they don’t show the view numbers when you use this method unless you have a recent submission for that POI and click on the white space to the left of the image. This only works on desktop browsers and is limited to a random selection of 20 of your submissions. If you have uploaded a virtual tour that might be more than 20 images on its own.

Another less than complicated change would be to remove the limit of 20 images and provide results pagination… Deja vu?

That’s interesting, Nigel. I didn’t think such long videos were acceptable. My longest is probably 20 seconds, but most are usually between 10 to 15 seconds. If I have a very long video from a party or other event, it won’t be the sort of thing I’d post to Google Maps anyway. I also find the long ones are bad for battery and data usage. Videos take up so much more space than photos.

It’s a throwback from a few years ago before the restriction was in place. Over a year ago I took part in a session discussing the future of Google Maps. The focus was mainly on the use of videos and the style of video that they were encouraging - they were feeling pressure from social media and were looking at; more glitz; higher production standards; sound; and attempting to keep things as short as possible. The issue of limited output bandwidth was raised and there was an admission that they had taken there eye off the ball. Moving forward to today and I don’t see a great deal of evidence that there has been much fundamental change. The output bandwidth is still an issue and aside from a higher profile for video, especially on mobile devices, there is no evidence of an obvious and clear strategy.

Thanks for clarifying. I guess we’ll keep on going until the next but of guidance is given.
