Technology & a more digitally Accessible ♿️ World

@Tejal thanks for sharing

@Anil6969 I remember almost all you share because you make your point in significant ways. Not just me, but all of us are doing our bit because, who knows? Even we may need these features some time, accidents do happen…

You are very right! I remember that period like yesterday. I am grateful to the Almighty who kept you alive and restored to you your voice, and good health too.

The day I saw you smile again, tease me again and without your neck collar!!! I was astounded! Thanks for recognizing all of these struggles so well.

:pray:

So, have you upgraded the Android version of your phone? Or what features of Accessibility have amazed you most on a digital device?

@Anil6969

You can always rely on that ‘companionship’, it has stood the test of time.

Thanks for sharing, once again.

I will like to ask more questions, like;

  • What are the accessibility features you look out for when you travel or when you are visiting a new place?
  • What is that one feature that has stunned you the most on a digital device?
  • Have you upgraded to the new Android 12 or 13? What are your thoughts about it so far?

Feel free to answer at your discretion, many are reading, many are learning, many are following this thread secretly or discreetly, you know this by now :blush:

Sure, Anil as long as there is life, there is hope, the tides have turned before, they will surely turn again, right?

You know all of these brings to mind the story of the watch repairer you shared on Connect, do you remember?

@Anil6969

I have checked through your profile and can’t seem to find it

Hi dear @Ewaade_3A and dear @Stephanie_OWL , :hugs:

thank you so very much for your kind compliment, dear Ewaade! :heart_eyes: :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: :bouquet:

You’re an amazing, notable Local Guide and a sweet soul too! :hugs: :star2: :bouquet:

I have an very great Google Pixel 7 Pro-smartphone since one week. :partying_face: :tada:

And I have Android 13 on it, of course. :star_struck:

A really helpful Google-product is the Google Assistant. :blush:

It’s the digital voice assistant by Google which is available on almost all newer smartphones and also on Smart Speakers made by Google. :star_struck:

It’s very practical because you can execute commands and ask a lot of questions orally.

For example: ,Set a timer.“, ,Set an alarm.”, ,Which date is today?“, ,Who is the president of America?” and so many more.

I think that the Google Assistant is an great help for people who unfortunately lost their eyesight. :older_woman:t2: ‍:probing_cane: :orange_heart:

On my wishlist for Christmas is a good 360°-camera and the Local Guides-pin. :star_struck:

A lot of Local Guides in Germany finally received an E-mail where they were able to choose the Local Guides-socks or the Local Guides-pin. :star_struck: :de:

Unfortunately, I don’t received this awesome e-mail. :disappointed_relieved:

I very hope that I’ll receive it too soon! :disappointed_relieved: :pray:t2:

It’s great to see you here, dear Stephanie! :hugs: :de: :bouquet:

I wish you both a great weekend! :hugs: :bouquet: :sunglasses:

Many warm greetings to you from Hamburg, Germany! :hugs: :star2: :nigeria: :de: :bouquet: :purple_heart:

What I love about your comments always is that; you never ‘manage words with me’, so, it’s always a pleasure to read from you! Thank you

Another thing is; your comments are always so colorful! You make use of so many emojis, it makes me feel every of the emotion you put into writing :writing_hand: :heart_eyes:

Wow! Congratulations on your new phone! So, you mean the ‘Google Assistant’ is just like Alexa or Siri? Wow!

Does it have a name too?

Awww… I hope your wishes gets granted…

When I was asked to choose some time ago, I chose the bag. Whoever rejoices with others, will get their heart desires granted some day, too, dear community builder :star2: :star_struck: So, I hope you receive that mail soon…

I hope someone who can make this happen is reading the comment.

About the helpful feature of the Google Assistant, I am wondering how this would help those who are visually impaired, can it help in navigating a room, for example?

I know @PaulPavlinovich shared with us sometime ago about his Phone and the connection with a smart fridge or something but I remember he added that; he won’t be impressed until it can actually get him a cold beer from the fridge :rofl: :rofl: :rofl: :rofl: :running_man::male_sign: :running_man::female_sign:

So, I am really interested in knowing how this works especially for the visually impaired, can it tell if there is something in their way?

Amazing post @Ewaade_3A the first thing I like about this post is the shout out given to all the accessibility champions as they’re totally deserving. Thanks for sharing it here :blush: .

Thank you very much for your very kind reply, @Ewaade_3A ! :heart_eyes: :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: :star2: :bouquet: :cherry_blossom:

Yes, the Google Assistant is just like Alexa and Siri, but it’s even more better! :star_struck: :star2:

It hasn’t a name, we call it: ,Google Assistant". :robot: :speech_balloon:

To activate the Google Assistant, we have to say: ,Hey Google" or: ,Ok Google".

The Google Assistant isn’t able to navigate in rooms and can’t tell if something is in the way. :pensive:

I hope that this will work someday! :blush:

It can only control smart Home devices, set timers, set alarms, set meetings, set reminders and it has the answer to almost all questions. :blush: :bouquet: :sparkles:

Visually impaired people can use the Google Assistant for it, because they can speak to the Google Assistant and the Google Assistant gives the answer or or execute the commands and the user can hear the respond from Google Assistant. :speaking_head: :speech_balloon: :ear_of_rice: :sparkles:

I think that this can help a lot of visually impaired people. :blush: :bouquet: :sparkles:

But I hope that it will become better in the future. :blush: :probing_cane: :sparkles:

Thank you very much, dear Ewaade! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: :star_struck: :cherry_blossom: :orange_heart:

Your reply is so very kind and lovely! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: :cherry_blossom: :star2: :bouquet:

I wish you a great day! :hugs: :hibiscus:

Many warm greetings to you from Hamburg, Germany! :blush: :nigeria: :de: :star2: :bouquet:

Hello dear Ewaade…

As a traveller, I (& my driver) use Google Maps, even for a short distance, because as a Metro City, in Bangalore you can get caught in a bad traffic block.

God’s grace, other than the Bluetooth, I’m not a fan of any other accessibility feature.

Exactly as mentioned by fellow LG @ChiaraMariaC , the most stunning feature is surely the Google Assistant - no doubt.

Yes, my current OS is Android 12 which I updated just a week back.

Honestly, I’m on routine jobs and hence not felt any difference, after the upgrade, so far.

Hope I have answered all your questions…

Hi @Ewaade_3A ! First I want to say I appreciate you tagging me, and don’t feel in the least harassed at all. I can see all the thoughtful work you put into your content, and that you were trying to honor those whose have the same passion for accessibility as you. Thank you for including me in your list of accessibility champions. I believe we should be lifting each other up, not looking for ways to tear each other down by citing rules, which were made for those who have ill intent, not someone like you, who obviously spent hours researching to find all the accessibility champions so you could be inclusive.

I found the altruistic motive in your article refreshing. To help people is the entire basis of why I became a Google Local Guide. I didn’t become a Local Guide for the perks, although I must admit I was ecstatic to FINALLY GET THOSE SOCKS, LOL!

I have written many posts about accessibility here in connect, and always include it in my reviews. I believe it is so important. I became even more passionate about being a disability advocate since becoming a Google Local Guide I started a website for this purpose: https://www.lynnecampo.com .

As a senior citizen I use a lot of the accessibility features in my phone. I had a Google Pixel 4a, which I recently traded for an iPhone 13 Pro Max. On both I use the larger print, bold font, contrast mode, and closed captions. Additionally for making calls many times I use the live caption features where I can read the calls instead if having to hear them. The Pixel phone phone can be turned into a tts device in settings so I can type my responses as well. The iPhone has this same feature called RTT.

Additionally, I like the way I can store all my health information in the phones. In my iPhone I have connected it to my doctors portal. Every time a lab result or a medication is changed etc. it automatically updates in my phone.

And lastly, because this should have been a post instead of a reply, it’s so long, lol, I like the SOS safety features. These are also accessibility features as they help someone call for help who cannot run, or shout, or may be differently abled.

Thank you very much for your excellent article!

You don’t know how happy you have made me feel!

I read the first line of your message and screamed, bolted out the door, read it to my Mum, I returned to my room and read the 2nd and 3rd lines, I bolted out again, by this time, my father had joined her.

I read your message to them and they smiled.

This is from a heart filled with gratitude. Thank you very much, ma. I appreciate.

I love long responses, I want people to express themselves in totality, holding nothing back, many a times, I write like that.

All of the features you mentioned, I set for my Father on his phone yesterday after upgrading the software, he is 72 years, so I guess qualifies as a Senior citizen too.

I have checked out your Website and I must say! You have taken a lot into consideration even the animals?! Wow!

Katie Mcbroom was a different kind of Googler, I respected and admired her alot! I mean; leave it to Katie to have discovered you and Daniel. In the article where she shared your story, there were 4 of you, the other two people have been celebrated in ‘single posts’ in one form or the other we have today.

I Adnire your strenght and courage and I am grateful to make your acquaintance today :blush:

I have some questions, two actually;

  1. What is the tts device in settings?
  2. Do you by any chance have a special Local Guides Wishlist for Christmas?
