RECAP: VIRTUAL MEET-UP - Top 100 Local Guides Leaderboards, what's next!

@AdamGT after reading so many positive and perceptive comments, I can’t really beat what’s already been said here so thanks to all my fellow guides in attendance. Although I had some issues rejoining the group at least I was there from the start and appreciated your presentation in good old plain English, albeit with an aussie accent! It was done in a succint manner which was appreciated.

I really enjoy being part of this diverse and dynamic community. Since I’ve joined I’ve had a renewed interest and extra motivation to improve Google Maps and the leaderboards help tremendously in striving to achieve that. A big thank-you for your work and input from fellow guides and the patience and consideration of all of you to help others, which is inspiring. I enjoyed learning about all of the latest improvements to the system which cumulatively make the leaderboard and even better place to be.

Happy 4th birthday to the Top 100 Leaderboards @AdamGT . During this time your efforts have certainly made a difference in our community and beyond.

I set my alarm for 0530 pacific to be sure I woke up in time on my off day from work to be apart of this. As a visual learner I appreciate the visual aspects of the presentation during the meetup. Everyone seemed excited to be apart of this history making roll out of new Leaderboard tools. All the interaction amongst the participants was great. @JustJake , @PrasadVR and @Rednewt74 did great working together to cohost. Enjoyed the hands on learning opportunity with all the new features. This was well worth the time investment to learn and grow. Looking forward to being apart of future meetup’s.

Thanks @AdamGT For enabling us with even more stats. Since becoming a local guide and joining Connect I have become a nerd (.a person who is extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable about a particular subject.)

You have helped. thanks from all of us.

Hey @AdamGT I didn’t realize you had such an extended session. I had to log off just before the end of the second hour. I didn’t understand about the Star Views tables and wasn’t able to test them while you were presenting online. Tried again a few minutes ago and it’s all good now. Not sure I would want to continue including this each time with my Star Photo reading the same number for consecutive months. My Star Video changed in March 2024, but the table reads as though all the preceding entries going back to 2023 were also the new POI. Are you still trying to find a fix for this?

Feedback, as requested:

  1. If you attended what did you think about the meet-up? - I liked it. Very interactive and educational.
  2. Was it worthwhile and if so, what did you gain by attending? - Learnt about the Star Tables.
  3. What part did you like most? - Improved Maps Data entry and validation.
  4. Would you attend the next meet-up on the Leaderboards? - Yes, as long as the time is convenient for me.
  5. What did you think of the way the meet-up was presented? - Good. Can’t think of what I would improve. If anyone in the group has a Google Workspace or Google One account, it would be less disruptive as meetings wouldn’t expire at the end of an hour.
  6. Was the presentation easy to follow or was it just too complicated? - Most of it was okay, but the new stuff was first presented while our access was switched off. Struggled to catch up afterwards.
  7. Was it too long? - More than an hour is usually considered too long, but your material could not fit in that time. I had to leave before the end of the second hour, just as you were announcing another extension.
  8. Over to you. - Now I have more time and have read through this recap, I’m trialing all that you presented.

@JustJake I have to apologize that in my comments in reply I hadn’t acknowledged your help during the meet-up. and have just updated the recap post accordingly. Thank you for your behind the scenes help which allowed the meet-up to run as smoothly as it did.

Sorry about the Aussie accent @MarkAuchincloss . It’s an accent I picked up after moving down under.

I’m pleased that notwithstanding the issues that you had rejoining, you were able to attend and pleased to hear you say that the Leaderboards have helped you tremendously in striving to achieve renewed interest and extra motivation to improve Google Maps. It’s also good to hear you say that you enjoyed learning about the latest improvements to the Leaderboard System and I do hope that you at least take them for a test drive.

Hello @Annaelisa

Firstly it was good to see that you attended the meet-up and while it was a new experience for you, I hope it was a good one.

I’m sorry that I don’t have any advice to offer you regarding Meet translations but I’m sure that you will appreciate why I presented in English. You might like to ask a question in the How-tos section about how to participate in a Google Meet session and translate to your preferred language. Maybe there is a way or someone will be able to give you some ideas on this! Anyway I am confident that you will are able to ask any questions that you might have about the new Leaderboard System features and get answers on the respective Leaderboard posts.

Danke @AdamGT

eine andere Sprache als Englisch habe ich auch nicht erwartet, Englisch ist nun mal die Weltweit gesprochene Sprache.

Ich wünsche dir einen schönen Tag

Thank you @Scheria for the 4th-birthday wishes but silly you, fancy setting the alarm for 0530 Pacific on your day off, a sleep in day no doubt, to be part of some silly meet-up :joy:  Of course I’m really pleased that you did and I’m happy to hear you say that you appreciated the visual aspects of the presentation.

Like you I also sensed the excitement in the air about the new features which explains why the scheduled 1-hour meet-up turned into a 3 hour meet-up and if that wasn’t enough, it then extended for a further 2 hours. I can’t imagine how long it would have been if I had included what I had originally planned for the Advanced Star Tracking feature :scream:

Yes I too think giving participants an opportunity for hands on experience right there and then during the meet is a great way to do it. As well as giving everyone the opportunity to discuss and clarify how to implement the new features, this practical sessions exposed some minor issues which were quickly resolved and one major one which was subsequently resolved. It was great to see and noted that you were able to so quickly dive in and showcase the implementation of the new Star Views History tables. You’re quickly turning into a power Leaderboard System user. Well done you!

Summing up, overall it’s great to hear you say that the meet-up was well worth the time investment to learn and grow and that you look forward to being part of the next meet-ups.

If you are talking about the HTML menu option on mobile, unfortunately Connect doesn’t provide this functionality on mobile and I don’t know if there is a way to get access to this functionality. Although a little cumbersome, one way that you might like to try is to:

  1. Start by using the Copy the star Views History Table feature
  2. Save the HTML in a file called history.html
  3. Open that file in your browser
  4. Copy the whole of the table shown in your browser
  5. then paste this into your Connect post.

As one of the very early participants on the Leaderboards, right there on the day of inception, I was pleased that you attended the meet-up and that after 4 years you are still getting value out of your participation. This is way from time to time I bring out new stats features, I’ve got to keep you interested :joy:

Oh I’m so pleased that I have helped nerdifying you LOL.

Thanks so much @tony_b , you’ve given me more of what I was precisely asking for, point-by-point feedback on the meet-up format and presentation style itself.

For example, you specifically mentioned interactive. I noted that @Scheria specifically mentioned that she appreciated the visual aspects of the presentation. You also mention that you would have preferred if you had access to the new features during the presentation rather than after it. I actually considered this but thought that some would drift away into a world of their own and miss important details being presented.

Thank you for mentioning the duration. A takeout from this meet-up for me is not to include so many new features and as I mentioned in my reply to @Scheria , I can’t imagine how long it would have been if I had included what I had originally planned for the Advanced Star Tracking feature :scream: So this means that we will need to have a follow up meet-up. Will you attend?

I hope that you will soon test and implement the new features and I look forward to your feedback on them.

Hi Annaelisa, if you’re a Level 10 VIP (shown in the top right of your Top 100 homepage), you will find it in the ‘VIP Lounge’ dropdown under ‘Star View Tables’

Danke für deine Antwort.

Das Auffinden ist für mich kein Problem, ich habe es sofort gefunden und kopiert.

Die Umwandlung durch HTML Funktion habe ich bisher auf dem Smartphone nicht gefunden.

Congratulations to you @AdamGT for a successful meetup and that stat is quite a thing 42 attendees for 21 different countries, wow! Congratulations to all Top 100 local guides on this 4th anniversary and congratulations again to all local guides on Connect’s 8th birthday.

I did enjoy the meetup, even though I came in after the first hour. Of course, the meetup was very practical and enjoyable that’s why most participants stayed even longer hours, Never boring! Your presentations were good and yes Christmas in July was a great thanks-for-coming too  .

I would definitely attend future meetups.
