They used to let people into the car barn behind the museum where you could touch and sit on the dormant cable cars too @KimberlyAnnG unfortunately that isn’t open anymore. It is amazing to think about those giant loops of cables with all their pulleys and other equipment thrumming away under the ground of San Francisco. SF has the only major operating cable car network that I’m aware of that is still part of daily transit service not just for tourists.
