@shunsader
Das Projekt ist ja noch nicht fertig
That’s awesome @Soykot_azam and congratulations on jumping in early and claiming a brick in the inaugural wall of fame. Note that while you might be at last row 8th from right at one point in time, it might be somewhere else at another point in time ![]()
@shunsader, continuing with the needed fluidity in the development of this initiative, I decided to show the “brick-by-brick” construction of the wall. The main reason for this is to give everyone feedback and only show those Local Guides that have followed the conditions of participation. Simply put, if a Local Guide that has expressed interest to participate but has not provided information required, they will not appear on the inaugural wall.
Talking about fluidity, you will have seen that this concept started with a (10 x 20) to (20 x 10) wall of 200 Local Guides and finally down to a (10 x 10) wall of 100 Local Guides. I have also changed to Connect usernames on the hover tooltip. It will eventually all settle down. Tell me, how are we going so far?
One problem that I foresee is non-unique avatars like the following.
Yes she has been very patient, sometimes explodes and well noted is that her patience is running very, very thin
Against this background, my main disappointment is that I have not had the time to make enough Maps contributions to keep up with everyone and also to write posts on Connect about my travels as I used to when I first joined Connect [e.g. Photos of a Different World and A Lisbon Street with a Story!]. However, it is personally very rewarding to motivate others and seeing them excel.
Oh @LightRich wasn’t it hot and sticky
I just never thought of Japan having that kind of weather! Good to hear that you are now totally ready to reconnect
and no need to apologize you can now get back on top of things!
@shunsader there’s no need to ask @WilfriedB or @Annaelisa. As I just explained to @Soykot_azam, while you might be in one position today you might well be somewhere else the next day and once the wall is overflowing with Local Guides, there’s a chance you might do a umpty dumpty and fall off the wall
pretty much all explained in the opening post ![]()

@AdamGT ,
It was just an attempt at lightening the situation. (a joke). I was in good spirits last night, and went to look at the progress, where my photo was in a prominent position, and had to look closer to see that it was still there. Hey, you’re an ace for letting people watch your work evolve. Did Michelangelo carve David in a courtyard for everyone to watch? (I really don’t know, but doubt it)
Haha @shunsader, I missed the joke as I’m known to take things literally. As an example of this, in an earlier comment you mentioned my wife so tonight she was going out to dinner with a girlfriend and instead of coming back home she arranged to stay at son’s place and as it was closer, she would go to work from there in the morning. Well at 9:11PM she sends me a txt message that read “I’m just about to drive home…
” I wondered why there was a change of plans but anyway went and opened the garage door. I txt’ed her back “How come babe?” but didn’t get a reply. Still no reply at 9:29PM so after an hour passed and she was still not home, I rang her at 10:30PM as she should have been back home by then. She laughed her head off saying no she meant that she was leaving dinner and heading home to son’s place and told me to go and lockup the garage
I do take things literally ![]()
LOL. It’s more about sharing the journey and engaging which helps iron out wrinkles in the idea. I too don’t know and like you doubt that Michelangelo carve David in a courtyard for everyone to watch. Maybe @AT_Rome, who, as well as being on the wall, is a master and very knowledgeable on Italian history could help us on that question!
@AdamGT , I would have thought the same thing if the situation was the same here. I had a son who lived in San Francisco for awhile, and we live about 45 minutes from there. “HOME” is where we hang our hat, not where we’re bedding down for the night.
Dear @AdamGT, you’ve evoked me, and I’ll respond to @Shunsader’s curiosity.
The answer is quite complex, but then again, over 500 years have passed… in short, YES, Michelangelo’s David was sculpted for public display in Florence’s Piazza della Signoria.
Here, by the way, is the whole story, which also involved Leonardo da Vinci…
Michelangelo sculpted the David on commission from the Opera del Duomo of Florence and the Wool Guild (Arte della Lana), who officially gave him the task on August 16, 1501, when Michelangelo was just 26 years old. Originally, the statue was meant to be placed on one of the external buttresses of the apse area of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (the Florence Duomo), as part of a large decorative project that planned to place colossal figures of prophets along the apse tribunes. However, due to the extraordinary beauty and grandeur of the sculpture, once the work was completed, a committee of artists (including Leonardo da Vinci) decided instead to place the David outdoors, in a very prominent position in front of Palazzo Vecchio, in Piazza della Signoria, where it became a symbol of the Florentine Republic.
The current statue of David in Piazza della Signoria is not the original, but a copy.
The original David by Michelangelo has been kept in the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence since 1873, to protect it from weather damage and deterioration caused by being exposed outdoors.
The replica in Piazza della Signoria was installed in 1910; it is a marble copy made by sculptor Luigi Arrighetti, who won a public competition held specifically to create a faithful reproduction of the original.
Before that, between the late 1800s and early 1900s, a bronze copy had been placed in the square, but it was not accepted by the Florentine people and was later moved elsewhere. Since then, the square has once again been guarded by a marble copy, while the original can only be seen in the museum.
Warm greetings from Rome, Italy
