Hi @NunungAfuah ,

Thank you for sharing.

Some of my friends and family have been quite critical WHY I would volunteer for Google. They say, surely there are other charities to contribute time to. To that, I answer that it is pure out of self-interest. This wakes them up and makes them listen more attentively… as it makes them curious.

"Both at home and on vacation, I use Google Maps all the time. Finding shops, museums, checking opening hours, how to get there and where to park, which bus to take. If that information is not complete or incorrect, it has a direct impact on my day. So the quality of information on Google Maps is really important to me.

Secondly, I tell them, it is good for my health. It makes me happy. It is more useful than doing a crossword puzzle, it gives purpose to part of my day. There are plenty of TED video’s with scientist telling us that relationships (read friends), having a purpose and giving (helping) and caring about others have an important impact on our health and happiness. All this can be achieved with the Local Guides program

Hi @NunungAfuah .

I am Mohammed Salmaan Nawaz from India.

I use to talk about Local Guides Program to most of the people I met. I experienced the both the thing which you mentioned. (As a tour guide, as an Google employee)

For that, I first clear their doubts that it is a volunteer program and our contribution is to be done on Google maps.

They ask me about perks, for that I tell them about Summit which amaze them but I try to explain them, that the most beautiful part is connecting with wonderful Local Guides people all over the world throughout the year, than attending the Summit a week. Isn’t it?

Thanks for this post!

Hi @NunungAfuah . This was such a great post to see and read through, thank you for sharing it. Many of the items you mentioned are great pieces of feedback about the program itself and conversations I’ve had too at various points in time. To add to what you shared, I’d add that sometimes people ask WHY I’m a Local Guide (often times before they realize I also work here) and I proudly say it’s because I like helping others and they get it then!

oh My God! @TraciC you features it! Thanks…

Oh, I forgot to share that the video Why i’m a Local Guide made by team was played as the background during the sharing session, and it works! I know that the team are proud to be Local Guides as we are, so I didn’t forget to always share in this big community, there are a big and amazing team behind.

@NunungAfuah What you’ve done is very good. You have cut out a path for the other local guides like me by giving an idea of how to make meetups special. It is very joyful when we introduce the local guides program to someone and teach them. I will also try the same, not in meetups only, but will try to make my daily routine. Congrats for your work…!!:clap:

Regards,.

JUSTIN ALEX

Hi @JustinAlex , thanks. Make as daily routine? Hmm sounds interesting! I have to try then!

can’t say no more mas @RahmatHarmanP . I do agree with you! Sometimes spamming happens because people tend to contribute but no idea how to make their contribution be good or right. We also believe that Local Guides are corcerning to fight spam. It seems you will have a good planning in 2018? Can’t wait to know. :slightly_smiling_face:

Well Valeria, I started my journey as local guide just alone. I have a lot of fellow friends now and I knew all those from local guide connect. When I was in my first meet up nobody was known to me. This is the link:
