Index of Local Guides Leaderboards (Experimental)

Thanks for doing that @nigelfreeney and I have to say, it’s totally different to the picture I had in my head from reading your first write-up on this. Am I right then that your idea is basically to place the index on my signature onto its own landing page? I’d be interested to hear what others think!

Hi @AdamGT ,

I realised as I was mocking it up that I was creating more complexity rather than providing simplification and a better user experience. I think the formatting is a good development on your existing signature. The titles being separated onto new lines also allow better use of space on mobile devices. I also think the star in this context allows people to quickly see whether a specific leaderboard has been updated for that month. Removing/moving any image also makes it more useable on mobile devices.

As far as the accessibility of individual leaderboards through the links:

Shortening the month name and adding the year allows easier use on mobile devices.

So yes I am suggesting that you had already fundamentally got the design you need - it just needed a bit of tweaking to make it fit better for the purpose you need.  :vulcan_salute:

I agree with this. Real-estate on the signature is very limited and we can certainly do a lot more on landing page post.

Yes that could be a simple way of showing it.

Removing/moving any image also makes it more useable on mobile devices.

Unfortunately Connect does not give us that much control regarding desktop vs mobile formatting of our contributions. The current Connect is basically just a blog with essentially a one for all and all for one setup.

Agree

This change doesn’t make it less useable on non-mobile devices  It just makes it useable on all devices.

Hi @AdamGT

I have often renamed thread titles with no issues. Deep links on Connect contains both the title with substituted spaces and the post number. The post number is what decides which post will be shown. The text part is secondary and can be changed. Older replies will show the “Re. Old title” part staticly stored with the reply. So no links will break when a thread title is modified.

Brilliant mockup, @nigelfreeney

But the last heading should be less generic = more precise.

Instead of

Top 100 Local Guides:

you could do

How to:

And why is Registre repeated?

Should Articles be Help?

Regarding where to post the landing page I don’t have a fixed opinion.

The important aspect is that it is static so we only need one bookmark to reliable access all the Leaderboards.

It could be under How-to (which I like because this is where I normally roam), under Photography, or under Achievements.

I believe Achievements is probably the most intuitive placement considering what makes them so interesting to the participants.

Placing them in Photography is not optimal as the number of the edits are included in the leaderboards.

It might be worth having all the leaderboards in the same section.

The Achievement section has less prestige I believe and was created to clean up having bragging statements all over. Having the leaderbords there might improve the reputation of the Achievements section.

@AdamGT It would be great to see it soon, as it will help all local guides find monthly leaderboards very quickly.

My thinking on this @MortenCopenhagen is that at the end of the day it really doesn’t matter where it is as most Local Guides I would think would bookmark the landing page. However, thinking about what it’s purpose is, to me it best fits in How-tos > How do I find the leaderboards?

I hear you @Mo_TravelleerX but keep in mind that there is nothing firm as yet. This is merely a discussion post aimed at thrashing out what works best under the constraints of the current Connect platform.

Hi @AdamGT

As seen in this screenshot it would be better if you made the tiles less wide so they fit on a mobile screen.

As you can see the album of star photos leave not even a tiny bit of the next image visible on my screen.

There is a grey slider but it fades to white unless I touch the screen and wiggle my finger.

A beautiful and excellent post @AdamGT ! :couple_with_heart_woman_man: I am loving this new layout and how it makes it easy to find everything leaderboard related. I really enjoyed your format as well with the images and table; it makes it really easy on the eyes to try to find the particular leaderboard we are searching for. :sparkling_heart: You are truly such a superstar and appreciate all that you do!

@MortenCopenhagen I am not sure which titles you are saying don’t fit on a mobile screen.

This all isn’t easy to do however I have tried something however I have reduced the width of the images so that you can see part of the RHS images.

There is no need towiggle your finger :joy:  I suggest just pressing and holding thumb down on any image and sliding left or right to display adjacent image links.

All of them are too wide to fit on mobile.

My concern is the many mobile users will not see the second column.

Yes I understand your concern @MortenCopenhagen so I have reduced the width so that you see more of the right hand column so have you checked it again?

This is really is not so mobile friendly and difficult to do on the current Connect. If truly responsive then the right hand side column (even numbers) should scroll under the left hand column (odd numbers) on smaller screens. However, if you hold your smartphone horizontally it should be fine.

A fresh screenshot from my end. I’m on a Pixel 7a. Nothing has improved. Actually it got worse.

I know that browsers interfer by scaling pages, so you have very little control.

There are some nasty workarounds involving setting the absolute table width and/or showing a white (invisible) image with the full width to trick browsers to show the full width.

I anticipate that most users will be using mobile, so why don’t you make only one column?

Cheers

Morten

I’m not sure why yours got worse @MortenCopenhagen given mine has improved.

Thank you so much for your kind words of appreciation @AZ_2021 I love the superstar bit haha. Just wondering, are you experiencing the same formatting issue as that of @MortenCopenhagen ?

Hi @AdamGT ,

I understand your desire to make things look slick and alluring to engage with existing T100 users and attract new users. However, in this case I think you are making a rod for your own back.

Adam “This is really is not so mobile friendly and difficult to do on the current Connect.”

Adam “Yes I understand your concern Morten so I have reduced the width so that you see more of the right hand column so have you checked it again?”

Morten “A fresh screenshot from my end. I’m on a Pixel 7a. Nothing has improved. Actually it got worse”

Adam “I’m not sure why yours got worse given mine has improved.”

The reason I suggested a simplified page with a single image is precisely because of the experience you are having trying to please all the users on different devices.

At one point I bought 15 different mobile phones to use as testing devices - you simply can’t please everyone - especially with the limitations imposed through the Connect platform. There used to be a website that would get volunteers to try out web page layouts take screenshots and then compile them as a browseable gallery. It was a great resource but nowadaysthere are two main groups of users. Those that have 10 year old devices that will never be compatible and the rest where cutting edge is constantly breaking things :joy:

Consider the 80 20 rule

You can achieve 80% of what you want with 20% of the effort required to achieve 100% - if it can be done at all. You already have a considerable workload. My advice to you would be to tinker with the mockup I suggested and then get on with more important things.
