wishing everyone a very happy and prosperous Chinese new year.
Last night, I visited Datuk Kong Temple, Parit Buntar, Penang, Malaysia to experience the rituals and celebrations for the new year.
Datuk Kong Temple is one of the largest Chinese temple on Penang Mainland.
It was such a splendid view, hundreds of devotees worshiping and submitting offerings and praying for a prosperous new year.
The new year celebrations were lined up with amazing fireworks show that lasted for over 30 minutes.

Happy Chinese New Year! I’m impressed about your photos and videos. Even if I didn’t know so much about the celebration, after your post I feel I saw the most. Did they offer traditional dishes on the carneval?

Honestly, it was my first time experiencing it and I have absolutely no knowledge of the actual tradition and cultural practices during such celebrations.
They did offer 3 roasted whole pigs but,
- I could not get close as people were all over the place to grab their share
- I don’t eat pork, so I was a little less interested to fight my way in
Also, I have no clue why there were 3 pigs. I know that Chinese number system holds significance to them but personally I have no knowledge about the merits/demerits of chinese numbers.

Many kudos for this post! It is so rich and colorful and brings so many traditions in one single place. I loved reading every bit of it.
I am wishing everyone Happy Lunar New Year, the year of the Earth Pig. It is so interesting to learn more about this calendar and how everything is calculated - all the 24 seasons during the year, the fact that sometimes months can even repeat one after another, the 5 elements (water, fire, wind, earth, metal) and the story of the 12 animals and the competition between them. Every combination of all these factors is special and auspicious for the New Year and what is expected to happen. @KarenVChin Do you know how those elements reflect what the year will be?
Here are some photos that I have captured before in China during the Chinese New Year.
Another thing that I like during the Spring festival is that elder people wish the younger generation health, luck, love and that they grow up strong with good hearts. I connect this idea with the “hongbao” (红包) and giving a present to the children. In my country we also have this tradition, expect for the hongbao. Here is a photo of different kind of hongbao packages that one can buy from a Chinese market in Beijing.
@KarenVChin I read your story and I felt happy and sad at the same time. All those beautiful memories that you have are very important and that you pass this feeling to next generations. Keeping the traditions, the love and warm memories will keep us unique and grateful for all we have and are. Thank you so much!
