9 questions about your journey for Connect’s 9th birthday 🎉

Happy 9th Birthday Connect community!! Time certainly flies and I can’t believe it’s been that long!! Boy, do I feel old now!

I love this task set out by the Google team to find out more about our ‘relationship’ with Connect!! Here are my 9 responses!

Where are you from?
I’m from Malaysia but currently splitting my time between the UK :united_kingdom: and Malaysia :malaysia:.

When did you join Connect?
Searching through my emails, my first contact with Connect was in June 2016!

How did you learn about Connect in the first place?
I was previously an assigned moderator (i.e. selected/recognised by the Google team) for the Manchester community under Google+. So I was invited to join a beta testing group just before Connect became public to everyone!

What time of the day/week do you like to check what’s new on Connect?
Historically, it is probably from early evenings until late with no set days. Currently, my available time is all over the place but I’m trying to reorganise myself and get back to a more regular routine!

Have you attended or hosted a meet-up on Connect?
Yes to both. I enjoy meeting other Local Guides both in person and virtually as they are always fun to hang out with!

What’s your favorite moment on Connect?
Ooh…too many favourite moments to choose from…but since we’re celebrating Connect’s birthday, I would say that Connect’s 5th Birthday celebrations were great fun! As always, @KashifMisidia was also very active in promoting meet-ups and celebrations so we had quite a few fun things going on then! Check out these posts:
A month long celebration of Connect’s 5th Birthday
Happy 5th Birthday Local Guides Connect!
Needless to say, I predict next year’s 10th Birthday is going to be wild!!!

Tell us about one Connect feature that you love.
I love the Meet-ups board where I can see all the meet-ups organised by the global community and then look for meet-ups that I can join in when I can! I feel that meet-ups are a core part of the community because it allows us to meet other Local Guides to share our passion, exchange ideas and learn new things or just to celebrate each other! It’s always fun and super positive! :heart_hands:

What one feature would you add to Connect if you could?
I would love to explore the Connect community via a world map; all posts are represented on the map as a pin! There will be different pin types/colours for the different categories and we can filter posts by a date range. This means all posts need a location but to protect privacy, we can assign posts to only state/region. And every pin is clickable so that we can jump straight to the post to read it! This would create a fun way to visualise new posts as they are published and to allow the community to zoom in to certain areas to discover posts from there without having to use the search function.

Tell us about one thing you’re planning to share or do on Connect this year.
As part of the 10th anniversary of the Local Guides program, I am ‘running’ a 12 months of celebration project. November and December is dedicated to the community and this will need quite a bit of planning and coordination so I am hoping to kick off work on that area soon! So stay tuned…

And those are my responses! Now, I’ll need to spend time reading as many responses from the community as I can!

Ooh.. I like your idea to plan, manage and organise our posts better! I certainly would like to be able to draft multiple posts and schedule them to post at a specific date/time!

@NileshNag ‘Trending’ is available already.. and ‘Featured’ is currently represented by pinned posts under each category page. Maybe you can expand a bit more about what you prefer e.g. do you want a Featured carousel like in the old Connect? Or tell us more about why the current implementation of Trending and Featured is not good enough.

@UchechukwuEnem Love your ideas for a “brain teaser” and “streak reward”! For the “brain teaser”, I wonder if this can be done every weekend (i.e. once a week) where they use AI to read through all the posts from the past 7 days and generate a quiz filled with 10 questions based on those posts. Then, as you answer the questions, you’re shown links to the post where the questions were based on.

The “streak reward” can be quite stressful though but could certainly be fun to see how long we can maintain it!! :+1:

@KetanChhaniyara Great ideas!! I definitely agree that a full-screen post editor would be useful! And since we’re using markup formatting, I think it would be great to be able to toggle a single or double pane (i.e. the editor is on the left pane with the preview on the right pane). At the moment, the top/bottom layout for editor/preview really limits the space to see long text!!

As for feedback, you can always posts ideas/feedback under the ‘Google Maps tips & tricks’ category, or if it’s something quite private, you can send it in an email. Sharing your feedback as a post can be useful because it engages the community to share their thoughts or support too.

With regards to reporting moderators, I totally agree that a 360° review system is important.. and the great news is that you can already do that. Every post/comment on Connect can be flagged by a user and reported to the Google team; at the bottom of every post/comment, you can tap on the ‘three dots’ (next to the share icon) to show the flag icon. Tap on that and choose the appropriate flag. If you need to explain certain things or if you’re unsure, choose the ‘Something else’ flag and provide your explanation/concern. Connect Moderators do not have any access/view to flagged posts/comments so we won’t see anything reported about us! Only the Google team will see these messages!! Hope that helps!

Hi @AdrianLunsong

Yeah, I may have missed the important words - like in the old Connect .
The carousel for trending posts would have felt good , instead of unlimited scrolling :winking_face_with_tongue:

Also, the “view all” for both - so posts appear on a couple of pages, mostly - is missed on the new connect.

I’ll edit my previous response. Thanks for pointing it out :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

@AdrianLunsong Thanks for elaborating - I completely agree with your suggestion (that’s exactly what I had in mind as well). Having the editor on the left and the preview on the right would indeed provide a much more pleasant and efficient experience.

It certainly does, though I’m also exploring something slightly different that might not yet be reflected in comments or on the platform. I really appreciate you taking the time to read and consider my thoughts.

Happy Mapping!

Thank you so much, @Julie_A, for these wonderful questions and answers challenges. I love reading our fellow local guides’ comments and seeing all those wonderful answers.

Here are my Questions and Answers.

1. Where are you from?
Answers: I was born and raised in the southern part of Bangladesh, which is Bhola District (Bengali: ভোলা জেলা). Currently, I am living in Lisbon, Portugal.

2. When did you join Connect?
Answers: It was probably in March 2020.

3. How did you learn about Connect in the first place?
Answers: I may not remember all the details, but I likely received an email about Connect Live 2020. I have completed all the necessary formalities and submitted my application. Unfortunately, Connect Live 2020 was suspended due to the COVID-19 travel restrictions, but I did receive a badge.

4. What time of the day/week do you like to check what’s new on Connect?
Answers: To be honest, I checked daily several times, and especially took longer during my lunch break, to read people’s posts and comments.

5. Have you attended or hosted a meet-up on Connect?
Answers: I regret to say that I haven’t attended any official events. However, I had the opportunity to participate in a physical event in Bangladesh in March 2021, which was organized by the Bangladesh Local Guide for their 7th anniversary. Unfortunately, I missed it due to COVID-19.

6. What’s your favorite moment on Connect?
Answers: Currently, I don’t have a specific favorite moment on Connect, but I enjoy reading the stories of other local guides and sharing their special experiences. On September 2, 2020, I had the pleasure of meeting @MortenCopenhagen and his daughter Sofie Meyer in Copenhagen, Denmark. I learned many helpful tips from him that have helped me later. And we also went on a photo walk around Brønshøj, Copenhagen.

7. Tell us about one Connect feature that you love.
Answers: What I appreciate about this Connect platform is the ability to share simple photos and read stories from other local guides. This is a bit different from the previous platform.

8. What one feature would you add to Connect if you could?
Answers: This is a great question. If such an opportunity exists, I would suggest including more groups to improve regional communication. I have been living in Portugal for over seven years, but unfortunately, I haven’t seen any Meet-Ups or Connect-related programs. Someone is working on this platform, but those of us interested in learning more about new opportunities should have at least been included.

9. Tell us about one thing you’re planning to share or do on Connect this year.
Answers: Portugal is a beautiful country in Europe. I plan to frequently post stories about this country and the regions I have already traveled to. If I have any opportunities for meet-ups, whether virtual or in-person, I will participate.
