You have a lot of control over how you use the Local Guides Connect community. Click on the icon in the top right hand corner of your screen to access your settings. Click "My Settings" and you can change many different aspects of your experience - including whether or not people can send you private messages.

Strange.  I cannot seem to find the setting to turn this feature on or off.  Also Your screen shot seems outdated.  How old is this post?
