Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is made up of tropical evergreen and deciduous forests and patches of grasslands. Thattekad is located to the north of the Periyar River, at the foot of the mighty Western Ghats of Kerala, South India. It is less than 50 km away both from the nearest airport, the Cochin International Airport, and the nearest railway station at Aluva. The best time to visit the sanctuary is between October and March. This globally acclaimed bird sanctuary became famous as a result of sincere efforts of the internationally renowned ornithologist ‘Bird Man of India, Dr. Salim Ali. He had surveyed Thattekkad, and called it the richest bird habitat he had ever seen. Thus his efforts were instrumental in the formation of this sanctuary to a large extent.
