Helpful guides in Slovenia

G'day my fellow guides,

So I have some questions for any Slovenian guides out there! I will be getting married in Slovenia next year (July/August) at the Grad Otocec and plan on spending around 10-12 days altogether in Slovenia. I have family living there already and will have around 30+ guests altogether. My questions and advice I seek from the guides are. What large group activities can we do in the region? (Lake Bled, Food & Wine tours, Cultural, Historical) I'm open to anything. What are some must try local food spots? Are there things traditional to Slovenia that we must see and do? And any recommendations for bus services, good accommodation, drivers, suit hire, cake maker (wedding cake) and anything you can think may be handy.

I look forward to any responses and feel this is a great way to use the large community or guides from around the world to help each other out! With that said, if anyone is coming to Australia, or Queensland in particular, then hit me up for anything you may want to know.

Travel safe friends.

The poster @ToniKras sounds like a nice guy and says he's an author and a traveler of those parts, so perhaps that map might help you.

Congratulations by the way!  That'll be a fun time.

Hi @JustinDonnelly!

First, congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

Grad Otocec is beautiful but so is Lake Bled. Have you thought about Lake Bled?

If you need someone to plan your wedding, or just need someone who can offer additional advice about wedding planning in Slovenia, I suggest you contact Primavera Bled (http://www.weddings-in-slovenia.com/en/). They're professional, helpful, and have been in wedding planning business for a long time.

Slovenian Tourist Board (https://www.slovenia.info/en) also has a lot of useful information. Here's a great article with a good overview of some of the activities you can plan for your group: https://www.slovenia.info/en/press-centre/news-of-the-tourism-press-agency/6260-slovenia-honeymoon-d.... You can also email them to check whether they have any brochures on wedding/honeymoon planning.

Also, there's a Slovenia Local Guides community you can join: https://plus.google.com/communities/111014677299208123666. @tomazgyorek is the owner of the community.

Here's a Google Map with all my favorites in Slovenia: https://goo.gl/aAvtMZ.

Since there will be 30+ guests, you might want to rent a bus. That way you'll have a personal tour bus to places you want to visit. One good company is Street Tour (http://www.street-tour.com/en). Kompas Tours might also be able to make arrangements and provide tours of interest (info@kompas.si).

Congrats once again and let me know if I can help with anything else.

Re: Helpful guides in Slovenia

Thank you very much! I am looking at starting to learn the language which is going to be a challenge, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it. I have got some great advice from him and I will look into it more now. I'm just so grateful of the caring and knowledgeable guides who are happy to help.

Re: Helpful guides in Slovenia

Thank you so much for such great information. I will contact the bus company in anticipation of having several people to transport, I also tried opening your map but it is not working unfortunately. I am going to begin learning Slovenian, as I want to be able to have a basic conversation with family and friends over there. We did look at Bled but my partner like Grad Otocec, we also found some great Slovenian photographers who will be able to help us with suggestions of things to do and also have a family vineyard and zidanica. Do you have any recommendations about cultural events, dinners, traditional music/dance/food?

Re: Helpful guides in Slovenia

Hi Justin,

Glad I could help. Here's the corrected link to the Google Map: https://goo.gl/aAvtMZ.

Another resource is the Best of Slovenia app: Slovenia Top 100 (free).

Great to hear you'll be learning Slovenian. Also get the Google Translate app which will come handy with phrases and words.

Slovenian wines and wineyards are wonderful. Here's more info about the wines and wine routes in Slovenia: https://www.slovenia.info/en/things-to-do/food-and-wine/wines-of-slovenia.

Slovenia is known for its soups, stews, dry meats, and meat in general. See some typical foods at https://www.slovenia.info/en/things-to-do/food-and-wine/eat-like-locals. Also download the Taste Slovenia guide (free). My favorite restaurant in Slovenia is  Hisa Franko.

Re: Helpful guides in Slovenia

Hi,

I am from the UK and I live on the coast near Piran. Lake Bled is fabulous. Go the island in the lake and ring the bell when you get married. You only have 100 steps to carry your lady up!

Contact me if you need any information.

Re: Helpful guides in Slovenia

Google translate makes no sense in my language. So:

More rakija? We absolutely don't drink any rakija.. We do consume some local moonshine we call šnops (old Austrian schnapps) or, more distinguished, sadjevec (a "fruiter", as a fruit brandy). So, when you begin sober, you say "En sadjevec, prosim." (A fruiter, please), later on you loose some dignity and switch to old Austrian "Še en šnops!" (One more shnapps).

Cheers: Na zdravje! (To health). Nostrovia is at least missspelled if not totally ununderstandable.

More questions? Feel free to ask.

Lep pozdrav vsem (Best Regard to everyone)

Marko.

Re: Helpful guides in Slovenia

Hello, I could write a lengthy post about it, but I will rather refer you to my Ljubljana & Slovenia related answers on Quora Q & A website. So here below are a few of them; note that links link to topics and not directly to my answers. If you want to see them (i.e. my own answers) just look for any post signed as "Tadej Peršič"...

What is a "must see" in Ljubljana, Slovenia?
What would be a good way to spend 5 days in Slovenia?

... and maybe also these two: "What are some lesser-known sights to see when visiting Ljubljana, Slovenia?" & "What is the best place to stay and what should I see/do in Ljubljana, Slovenia?". I hope this helps in any way!

Greetings from Ljubljana, Slovenia and best regards, Tadej P.
