I noticed our Pasmo/Suica cards didn't work in Osaka and they had their own version of these (forget the name), so we purchased one and used one there.

Yes, you are right! There are several kinds of pre-paid IC card for transportation in each region. Suica is mainly sold in Tokyo and the area of JR Tokai. It's complicated for the visitors. I always use Suica card to get on the train and purchase some food or beverages at 711 or Lawson. However I live in Osaka. Suica is definitely available in almost all of area in Japan. Try again in your next trip to Japan.
