exploring the territory of 1st World War - The battle of the solstice - Saint Eustachio Abbey

"in a war, nobody wins - we are all losers"

Nervesa della Battaglia is one of the towns involved in the Battle of the Solstice. Built on the top of a hill, the Abbey was an exellent observatory to control and command the artillery, and for this reason it was targetted and distroyed.

The Abbey is (was) a beautiful example of the Romanic Art. Built in the XI century, during the XVI and XVII centuries it was an important cultural centre.

Now the Abbey is under restoration, to became accessible for the visitors. But even right now, I want to suggest a visit, climbing the hill through wonderful vineyards.

exploring the territory of 1st World War - The battle of the solstice - Francesco Baracca

"in a war, nobody wins - we are all losers"

Francesco Baracca was the commander of "the Squadron of Ace Pilots". He was the Italian "top Flyer" during the first World War, with more than 60 battles.

He died during the Battle of the Solstice, shooted by the artillery, and his flight fell down near Nervesa della Battaglia. In that place there is now a monument.

The monument is in the Montello's woods, https://goo.gl/maps/CV2KuHMtUy12, in a quite and beautiful area. The visit is free, a nice  place for a meditation, or even for a walk into the woods.

The coat of arm of Francesco Baracca was a Prancing Horse that, in laters years, his mother gave it as a present to Enzo Ferrari. The Prancing Horse is the Ferrari's symbol.

Thanks to you @IlankovanT for reading. I think that we, being LG, should have more attention for our history and our territory. We can learn a lot from the past.
