This is how Thai Pongal is celebrated in Batticaloa. Thai Pongal is a festival known to be a thanksgiving for sun. This is traditionally being observed by farmers who rely on seasonal rainfall for their livelihood and has become a festival celebrated by all hindus. On this day, Pongal is cooked at all households and is shared with their neighbours and friends. Pongal, a sweet delicacy which is also called as rice pudding is made out of raw rice,jaggery, green gram, milk, fruits and nuts as ingredients.

 

Pongal is also known as Pukkai in Tamil by certain people in Batticaloa. This delicacy, once cooked is first offered to sun and other gods and then shared and served among friends and relatives. Pongal festival falls in the 1st day of the year according to the Tamil calendar which generally falls on 14th or 15th of January.Therefore this is observed as an event thanking nature basically sun before starting a new year and with prayers for prosperity throughout the year.
