My ancestors were a sailor.

The Sea Tribe is an ethnic or ethnic group located in the Riau Islands region. They live on a boat called Kajang and always move around depending on the climate and the seasons.

They are not the common fishermen who at night go to sea and when the day comes, return back to the mainland. They are 'abstinent' fishermen returning to the mainland. Every inch of their lives is spent in the sea. From daybreak until the sun disappears at the eastern end of the horizon. From eating to drinking. Starting from waking to sleep. Even for lovemaking and childbirth though, they do over the sea. In the boat they call Kajang.

This is how the Sea Tribe lives and lives. Over the wide and open sea.

For sea tribes, the sea has become destiny. Something that seems to be absolutely acceptable as a life. Almost all of their lives are inseparable from the sea. The salty sea water, the fish's carcass, the waves, the mangroves, and the burning sun are something that they swallow every day. The tribes of the sea and the sea have become a loyalty. Inseparable.

From the sea is the Sea Tribe scavenging life. As the night moves up, and the waters begin to recede, they begin to ignite the lights of petromak. Once the lights are brightly lit, with only armed with oars and spears, they move towards the middle of the ocean. Hunting cuttlefish or squid, Ribam Fish, Nos, Pari or if lucky can bring mermaids home.

A HISTORY OF CULTURAL SEA & BATAM CITY
Batam Island in the past

"Not much to note about Batam Island". Thus the recognition of Batam City Government through his profile book.
Batam was mentioned in the Treaty of London in 1824. From the ancient manuscripts belonging to Raja Kamarudin, one of the figures in the Kampung Melayu Jodoh region, explained that Malay figures since the days of the king of Riau kingdom, many married to the Bugis.

Bugis people whose soul sailors and nomads often use the island of Batam as a stem or a bridge to continue the journey in the sea. They often say the island as the island of Batang, then gradually the indigenous people say the island of Batam.

While Riau is the origin of the word from boisterous, which means crowded. Because since safe Malay Kingdom is in the know with noisy. Unfortunately the script belongs to Raja Kamarudin can not be saved when the fire that destroyed Kampung Melayu.

Here is the record of Raja Kamarudin's manuscript.
Year 231 M, Batam Island has duni tribe of sea. The sea tribe is a native melay tribe that inhabits the islands of the Malacca Strait and the Singapore Strait. Year 1300 AD, Batam Island is controlled by Tumasik Kingdom located in Singapore Island now. At the time of the Malacca Kingdom Berjaya, Batam Island controlled the Kingdom of Malacca with the supervision of Admiral Hang Tuah. After the fall of the Malacca kingdom, Batam Island is controlled by Admiral Hang Nadim based in Bentan Island, or now Bintan Island.

Sepeninggal Hang Nadim, Batam Island under the influence of the Sultan of Johor. Around the year 1800 present Riau Riau Linga who controls Riau Islands including Batam Island, which is Dipertuan Muda Riau until the end of the Riau Malay Kingdom centered in Lingga parted with the Kingdom of Johor, then the Great Dipertuan then Kingdom Melayu Lingga Riau expressed menjaid three sultanates, namely the Sultanate at Daek Lingga, Kesultann Yang Dipertuan Muda on Penyengat Island and Tumenggung Abdul Jamal on Bulang Island.
The arrival of the Dutch who originally only trade in the end colonize the entire archipelago including Batam Island in genggamannnya. Dutch colonizers often in the ropak in the Malacca Strait, among the pirates is Admiral Ladi, who sreing hidden in the river. Now the riverside hideout is called Sei Ladi which has now turned into Dam Sei Ladi.

Brief History of the Batam Sea Tribe

People call it the Sea Tribe because this tribe lives wandering in the sea and has special features such as doing daily activities on a boat and wandering along the waters. In general, the tribe has the same culture that is still simple, both social and technological.

The area they occupied is, along the RI border with Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam, precisely at 4º15-0º48'LS and 103º10'BT - 109º00'BT. So geographically they inhabit a strategic area which is a cross-shore international cross between the Malacca Strait, the Philip Strait, the Singapore Strait and the South China Sea.

That's why their lives attract attention. Due to the sedentary Sea Tribe, sometimes inadvertently often cross the border without official channels. So unknowingly, they sometimes have settled in other nagara waters, because of the life on the moving boat.

Among their main types of livelihoods are fishing, catching / spearing fish. Tribal sons since the age of 12 years have been able to catch fish. They are trained to spear fish exactly at a distance of 10 meters. Therefore, the Sea is a very binding field, where they live in groups to fish by moving from one island to another, and rarely land except to take water or sell fish to "Tauke".

The reason they are looking for tauke is to sell their fish catch, usually from tauke they get rice, sugar, used clothes and other necessities as a substitute for the fish they sell.

What is more concerning is the life of the tribes that are still on the boat was done in a small boat measuring 1.5 x 5 meters. Above the boat that's all their life goes on. Stay, cook rice, wash, burn fish, sleep until the inauguration of marriage was held on the boat.

Physically, the Sea Tribe is renowned for its tough challenge to storms at sea, due to its traditional knowledge of nature, tidal winds, weather and tides. Nevertheless their social life remains powerless in the face of fetters of ignorance, poverty and backwardness from various aspects of life.

The beliefs of sea tribe people on their mystical and superstitious matters so that traditional ritual ceremonies are often performed, usually in their village there is a leader who is called the Chief Tribe. Chief of the tribe is what can determine what can and can not be done by its citizens.

Sea Tribe: Economics And Education Disadvantaged

Sea Tribe, or often also called Orang Laut is a tribe that inhabit Riau Islands, one of the provinces in the western island of Sumatra. The term Orang Laut includes various tribes that settle on the islands and estuaries of the Riau Islands-Lingga, Pulau Tujuh, Batam Islands, and coastal as well as islands off the coast of East Sumatra and the southern Malay Peninsula.

The condition of the archipelago, Riau which consists of 96% of the ocean is very supportive for most of the citizens of the Sea Tribe who work hereditary as a traditional fisherman. This relatively small income work affects the economy of the Tribe Sea and affects the welfare of those with a poverty percentage of 7.40% in March 2011.

Most of the Sea Tribe people, amounting to about 300 heads of households, do not have permanent houses, plus little income to go to sea. Most of the catch is Senangin Fish which is quite expensive, about Rp 23.000 per kilogram, and Ikan Otek for Rp 5,000 per kg. However, only a few fishermen who have adequate fishing and jarring tools and have the ability to go to sea that follows the development of the times, so that the catch is obtained stagnant and unable to meet their daily needs. With the influence of the lack of economic prosperity, many sea tribe children are forced to experience dropping out of school because there is no cost. Many of them are never even educated at all, and at the age of children should work like adults. The highest level of education participation of the Riau Islands is at elementary school level (SD) with 99.35% percentage. In 2010 and declining when reaching high school level. Very rarely do we see Sea Tribe children who managed to open a small business, become teachers and police. Being a Bachelor or Government Official also feels far from wishful thinking.

The education of sea tribal fishermen community is still very low, not many are educated up to senior high school level, "Most of them are only graduated from elementary school, after which they directly go to sea.

But actually, the Sea Tribe community has considerable potential to raise the economy and education of its people. Geographically they inhabit a strategic area which is a cross-sailing international junction between the Malacca Strait, the Philip Strait, the Singapore Strait and the South China Sea.

The problem of the Sea Tribe is not being able to manage and distribute the catch, which is managed by the collector at a low price. This concerns and makes the people of the Sea Tribe become increasingly left behind.

One effort that can be done to overcome this condition is held efforts to increase the human resources of the Sea Tribe, Capital Assistance to buy a boat or pompon, and concentration on education. This is certainly a serious enough homework for the Central Government as well as the local government.

Indonesia is known as a maratime country, island-island, to why my sailor's ancestor's name is probably because of the means of transportation used in ancient times to move from a place to another place and all their activities during the long journey that they do on the ship sebuhau or boat, because most of their life is done on a boat or boat then they are called a sailor. so times ya ?. yes if one sorry yes, I am not a history person.
but I do not speak it, we will discuss about the journey of the tribe of the sea, wading his life .. if there is any wrong in the correction yes ..

MARINE SEA

Many terms about the understanding of the tribe of the sea, some say the sea tribe is a group of fishermen whose lives or work to earn a living in the sea as well as fishermen and living in pingir laut. but some say that the tribe is a group of people whose activities are all done on the sea or river, such as cooking and so forth.

Sea Language has a resemblance to Malay and is classified as Local Malay. Currently they generally work as fishermen. From some portraits of marine tribes, marine tribes are not only dependent on the sea to make a living but also all their lives depend on the sea, even some portraits show that the boats they use have functions as a means of making a living and living.

Like the Bajau Orang Laut people are sometimes dubbed as "sea goats", because they live on the boat. They do not inhabit an island as its territory, they are always wandering to live a living where the sea negates, nevertheless marine tribes also sometimes stop by land to survive storms and bad sea weather, or simply to exchange the food they need.

Lately the existence of the Sea tribe increasingly threatened by the insistence of large capitalized fishermen from various regions or abroad who have modern technology. They are more agile looking for fish because it uses a large ship equipped with a radar fish monitors and sophisticated navigation. In order to capture tons of fish quickly, they do not hesitate to use trawl nets or kunsi, dynamite, and chemicals such as rounds. As a result, marine ecosystems are increasingly damaged and many small fish are killed in vain.
Hemm it's a shame if the singing of my ancestors a sailor just to sing, when later our children and grandchildren find the tribe marine is a story of the time of his father or mother.

Malay settlements on the coast of the island of batam sebahagian largely derived from the tribal sea tribe bugis

It's unique to find married couples.

There are some typical marine tribe traditions to find a life partner.

1. In terms of finding marriages the tribal women will conduct a boat or boat race with their male partner. If the male candidate loses from the woman then the man failed to ask her.

2. In addition there is also a pillow hit game is a game where the woman must avoid the pillow punch from the prospective man who is determined 3 times the chance for women hit by a blow.

Info:
For sea tribes the term Bangkai (carcass) is for people who have died

Hopefully this article useful to add our insight all ...
Thanks.

Hey @Edie_Nurdy,

It was quite amusing to read about the Sea People. It would be great, if you add any other relevant photos to your post.
