Khatyn, Republic of Belarus

June 22 - the beginning of the Great Patriotic War. On this day, German troops invaded the territory of the USSR.  Is a "Day of Remembrance and Sorrow"

Khatyn is a Belarusian village that was destroyed on March 22, 1943 as revenge for the murder of several German soldiers. In accordance with the principle of collective punishment, all residents of Khatyn were burned alive or shot.

In 1969, on the site where the village was located, a memorial complex was opened. Khatyn became a symbol of mass civilians killing during the war.

The memorial architectural and sculptural complex covers an area of about 50 hectares. In the center of the composition of the memorial is a six-meter bronze sculpture "The Unconquered Man" with a dead child in his arms.

From the adult inhabitants of the village, only 56-year-old village blacksmith Joseph Kaminsky survived. Burned and wounded, he regained consciousness only late at night, when punitive detachments left the village. Among the corpses of his fellow villagers, he found his son Adam. The boy was fatally wounded in the stomach, received severe burns. He died in the arms of his father. Joseph Kaminsky and his son Adam served as prototypes of the monument in the memorial complex.

Thanks @SergeySud, for both the interesting photo and the story you are sharing with us.

This is a story we should remember, keeping memory of the real meaning of this word: "war"

Re: Khatyn, Republic of Belarus

Quite sad and interesting story.

6 meters means around 20 feet tall

Sculpture itself telling the story of the unconquered man.

Artists master piece.

Thanks @SergeySud for informative post.
