A New Option for Meat-loving Vegetarian - Green Common Landmark, Hong Kong

Going Green

I started Green Monday in 2014 and started my journey on exploring (lacto-)vegetarian food in Hong Kong.

Recently, Green Common introduced Beyond Burger to Hong Kong, the first spot for export sales. Beyond burger looks so realistic as beet inside "bleeds", but does it taste like a real beef burger given it is plant-based? Does it give the fatty flavour of meat? Can't tell before tasting it, so I paid my 1st visit to Green Common Landmark to start my week.

Beyond Burger, Unboxing

Not sure if it due to launch of Beyond Burger and/or Green Monday (maybe the downed barcode reader too), the queue was long. Costing HK$108, I order Beyond Burger Plus, with vegan cheese and avocado (should be in half), and waited for another 10+ minutes.

It comes into a box just like those you see in McDonald's.

It's gigantic and took me quite some bites to get this pic 😛

Tasting

It's complex, creamy and tempting. Frankly it doesn't taste like beef, it doesn't have the (bloody) flavour of beef nor fat. (By then I realise beef does have some strange tastes that I compromise) Texture of patty is 90% like a beef one and don't forget the "medium rare" look. The cheese and avocado are real plus! They give out fatty, satisfying flavour that makes you content.

Conclusion - It's a Yes!

After all, I think it deserves its price, given the R&D behind and the interesting nutrition facts of this burger. You pay for a similar or even higher price in any proper burger shop, so why not invest a bit on your health (and for the environment if you concern)? If I am to visit burger shop twice a month, I'd rather go for a vegan one at least once to balance the disadvantages of meat out (cholesterol, antibiotics, extra water needed to grow meat, you name it).

N.B. Green Common sells a large variety of vegan products, from ready-to-serve to home appliance for food preparation, feel free to explore their shops
