Share and follow lists of places in Google Maps

Former Google Contributor

Feature Request: “We love making lists, but we want to be able to share them with our friends and follow lists made by other Local Guides.”

When Local Guides got early access to create lists in Google Maps, you put together great content and gave us helpful feedback. We have good news for those of you who are eager to share lists with friends and family. That feature is starting to roll out today for Android and iOS users with the latest version of Maps.

Here’s how it works:

  • Open the Google Maps app
  • Search for a place you would like to add to a list, select it, and tap SAVE.
  • This opens a screen that allows you to add that location to an existing list, or create a new one.
  • After you add a place to your list, you’ll see a banner that says “See List.” You can either access the list from there, or find it in the side menu under “Your Places.”
  • Go one step further and tap the share button at the top of your list. Tapping it will generate a link that you can send via email, text or social channels.

Lists are viewable on mobile and desktop—and even offline. Next time you're on a trip, download offline maps of the area in advance and you'll be able to see all the places you’ve added to lists on the map itself.

@Corrie Superb! Very helpful for everyone.

That's great feature...

My sister travels alot each year. She has visited several countries in different continents so far. Since she is really busy, most of the time she relies on my suggestions for a particular city based on online searches so this feature will give me the option to make the lists for her forthcoming trips.

Hi @Corrie

In Sharing Options, there are:

Public - Anyone can see this list in places like Google Search and your public profile

What does public profile mean?  G+ profile?  Maps profile?

For Google Search - search by Name of the list?

Level 7

@Corrie I see the list feature now in my default Gmail Account, not in my legacy G Suite Account (which is Local Guide Level 5) nor in my other G Suite Account (not taking part in Local Guides).

When will it roll out to G Suite Accounts?

Thanks @Corrie. I am not sure how I missed that update. It is super easy and will come in handy. I just created my first list.

Just created my first local map but i think that using only app is stupid 'cause people like me works better at home, using a browser, creating and sharing it via web and not only via app.

If you glad to visit this local map, about a tipical ligurian street food (focaccia) and the best places when you can buy it, visit my first local map

Great idea, guys! Looking forward to the shared lists. Can you see them publicly (someone has a top 10, for instance, but you don't know them) or only with specific people you've shared with?

@adolfi

I enjoyed the fact that you shared a list and I'm thankful  you chose to share your  experience as a guide :: to use the desktop would be amazing!

upon reading this it made me want to publicly announce how grateful I am for the application on the phone !

I don't get to use a desktop (rarely jump on maybe 2 x week)

and to be frank my experience starting out on these forums with Android has been somewhat frustrating albiet the process of posting and sharinf weighs out the bad. the economic factors and good energy locals produce is worth exchange!

but using the browser on this forum on the phone learning the updates and launching an event for upcoming Map Your world all on this phone is...an experience! 😉

thr forum just reloaded earlier hence err message anf now data is down so cant tag you! these are the woes of freedom. and ill take it 😉

i have lots of lists but that will have to be later. cant wait to chek them out!

@CourtenayVI suppose that @adolfi should be me. I'm not young (over, over, **####** not so over but over 50yo), i'm a net user from early '90 and i work better with a real keyb, a mouse, a very great IPS monitor (i'm looking for a new one, maybe a 27/28", for photo editing).

I like the phone app, but desktop (browser) GMaps hasn't both "list of places" editing and viewing (i don't see mine on my GMaps account on browser).

BTW dasktop way have My Maps included, that i can't see on app version: astonished.

Because shoud be great, really great, that My Maps should trasferred on "list of places" and creating only one great map experience both app and desktop.

Hi everybody,

I just started my list.....what a great idea! It's a famous comedy club in Hermosa beach where Jay Leno performs regularly. We happened to be in the area a few years ago visiting family and I took these snaps of a famous Ferrari.

Finally! Have been waiting for this for YEARS.
Any of these things in the product roadmap? I have so many ideas!

  • Icon designs and colors- Library of design choices, upload your own designs, or customize/build your own with premade options (i.e. cars for roadtrips, forks for dinner spots, etc.)
  • Simple way to share/embed on websites or blogs
  • Use existing app data to prepopulate potential lists- For example, the favorites list would pull from where you go often or all coffee shops that you reviewed as 4 or 5 starts would automatically create a "Favorite Coffee Shop" list...
  • A way to create slideshows/interactive presentations of maps and the ability add additional information such as photos from your reviews
    • (Perhaps an integration with Bambu for Slideshare...?)

I could go on forever...

Is going to be a great way of inspiring beginners.

If Saved Lists and My Maps could have a child, it would likely be the perfect product.  Saved Lists could be the perfect product for building your own personal trip plans or providing trip recommendations for others, but the product needs a few improvements to keep a saved list from becoming an overwhelming overload of data:

  1. Bring the icon set from My Maps to Saved Lists or, at minimum, allow the basic round icon currently used to be assigned a color to help distinguish separate lists.
  2. Somewhat related to #1 above, there needs to be a way to declutter of "best of the city" list.  The default view in a single list seems to be in the order of date added to list.  A long list of restaurants, parks, etc. can become a cluttered mess.  Someone using the list to find the best place to eat may grow tired of scrolling through several places on this list that are not restaurants.  If any type of color-coded icon feature is not prefered, at least make a way to sort the items in a list such as type (restaurant, park, etc), alphabetically, or by distance from my current location.  (On a side note, the same sorting should be available in my default Favorites and Want To Go lists.... they have become a crowded mess.)
  3. Borrowing from My Maps, having a way to save a note or comments on each item saved would be very useful.
  4. Last, but not least, make Saved Lists available on desktop.

Great Job Bro.. Thank you so much.

Level 7

I love this feature.  Easily the best way to share advice about places to go and see when you travel!

Level 9

Очень эффективно и хорошо работает и я использую эту функцию ...

Спасибо CorrieD.

I would love to be able to share my new list in "My Places" with others and allow them to edit too. I'm trying to use this feature in planning a trip with a couple of friends and this would be a great way of capturing all of our "want to visit" places in one location, and then have them handy when using the map when we get there. I've tried to use "My maps" too where I've created such lists but they are hard to access through the phone app and add new places to them
Level 5

I tested a Google app called Test Flight last year when we went on vacation in Oregon. It assembled our flight info and all places of interests that we intended to visit on one app.It was cool that is did this but we pretty much went by our planned itinerary anyway. It's on my iPhone now as Google Trips.

Cheers,

Zed star.

Level 8

Hi Corrie, I like this idea - do you know if it will become available for Desktop?

I used to do this with Google My Maps to create lists for myself, and for friends who were planning travel. I found it convenient to be able to create layers and labels, and mark with a variety of colors and symbols to create a legend. It was nice to be able to share it with individuals and by link, and publicly if I chose.

Currently, I'm finding that I have hundreds and hundreds of places starred on Google Maps, and it's been helpful to have the new "Favorite" and "Want to Visit" icons to distinguish within large clusters of starred locations - but it's tedious to have to do it all on mobile. Given the number of locations involved, I tend to add locations on the go, and then revise when viewing on desktop. I'd like to be able to select multiple locations and add them to a list or change the type of marker used. I'd like to be able to add labels and annotations as I did in My Maps, and export the groups of places to shared lists or custom maps. Is there currently a feature that would allow local guides to do this, or do you expect one might be on the way?

Level 8

@SarahJS, excellent post!  I share in your frustration.  Google has three excellent products:  Trips, Saved Lists (in Maps), and My Maps (also in Maps, of course).  All great, yet each has their down drawbacks preventing any of them from being a solid trip planning or trip sharing tool.

Drawbacks

Trips:  Not available on desktop; not able to organize saved places; only able to save places from a small, predefined list.

Saved Lists:  Not able to annotate saved places; not able to choose icon or color of icon to differentiate a saved list; not able to sort items in a saved list.

My Maps:  Not able to select an item from the list (legend); not able to edit on mobile app.

I'm leaning toward Saved Lists being my favorite tool, but it just needs a little more organization refinement to be perfect.

Level 8

I've been using lists a ton! Making specific lists for types of food, shopping and even country specific ones.

I'll never forget a good place to eat or shop again.

Wow just amazing ! very nice !

Thanks
