Moderation comes to Google Maps for Mobile

Former Google Contributor

Today we are announcing new and easier ways for Google Maps and Google Search users to suggest and moderate edits to information about a place.

Moderation: You can verify suggested edits from others

We heard the feedback that Local Guides wanted to be able to extend their knowledge over more areas of Google Maps and that you wanted faster approvals of your edits. Now you can help approve edits suggested by others, ultimately reducing the amount of time it takes for edits to appear on the map. For places that have pending suggestions, you’ll see a notification stating that “Someone suggested new info.” If you click or tap that notification, you’ll have the option to verify whether the suggestion is accurate. Once enough votes are received to be confident that the suggestion is accurate, it’s published to the map. This feature is available to Android users on the Google Maps app and both Android and iOS users on mobile Google Search.

The following information about a place can be user-edited and voted on through this new system:

  • Existence (whether a place is permanently closed or doesn’t exist)
  • Title
  • Address
  • Category
  • Phone
  • Website
  • Business hours

Google-wide: You can add places or suggest edits from more places
We’ve expanded the ability to add missing places and edit existing business or landmark information worldwide on both the Google Maps app (Android, iOS) and through Google Search. This lets people contribute new and updated information to Google Maps from more places—whether they’re searching for a new restaurant on Google.com or looking for a nearby convenience store while on the go.

The is excellent and I've actually had this pop up already. One question though. If we dismiss the notification because we need to visit a site to verify the info will it come back again, can we pull it up ourselves or do we need to answer when the notification first appears?

 Great Post CorrieD

Trying to share in our Local Guides G+ Community, 3 tries 3 fails!

Level 6

GregW - the notification stays on the place details page until you vote yes/no on the question. So you can go back to it later.

Perfect , thank you.

This is awesome. Hopefully this will improve the quality of Maps data! 🙂

Yup, I hv been seeing this and it's a great addition. Proactive requests from the app itself does wonders

it would be great if recently changed informations do come up for validation more often.

I had seen it once in android but not frequent. Never on iOS. The thing is , in my place people are pretty aggressive I guess in changing and adding info n sometimes are wrong.

Recently I Met a business owner , who by chance recognized me cause I m a local guide n my review comes first. Initially angry, he said I gave his wrong contact info!!! Well I did calm him down saying I just did a review n never edited his contact as it was already present.

His is contact info and business hours were given wrong, the guy to whom the contact info belonged was behind the business owner as he was getting calls on queries about price of Car Tyres !!

Well ill advices him , helped him create a google my business account for verification of his business so that nothing of that level happens in future :-))

Esta bueno el artículo @Corrie ojalá llegue pronto a la plataforma de iOS en Google Maps, esto mejorará la calidad de los datos en los sitios que existen en Google Maps.

Just verified that the notification stays on  the details page. I confirmed some changed details so all is cool. Oddly,  I was also asked to verify details for  a place that I had added myself. I did it but felt a little guilty verifying myself.

Great idea. I saw my edits approved lightning-quick. Previously, edits could wait weeks for approval.

So we can add landmarks now?

Cool that we can moderate each others additions.

Level 7

I really like this! Editing places is one of my favorite things to do in Maps when I have some time to kill, or if I notice a place's hours are waaay off.

Level 8

J'ai déjà reçu cette notification sa fais plus d'un mois.

C'est très utiles.

This is one very good and helpful upgrade. I am sure that with this option the quality of the google maps going be look better.

Thank you team.

Let's help everyone to find more easy and fast way accurate information about searched places on Google Maps.

I'm afraid that making the editing option visible will lead to tons of faulty edits by non-LocalGuides 😕

Thank you for letting us know about this update. This feature will definitely improve the quality of Google Maps in future. Kudos to the Google Map development team
Level 7

I had to try this.I think there will be issue. If i suggest an edit generally it gets approved instantly or with in a hour.now if i had to wait for some one like me should approve my edit.It takes more time. And there will be people who reject purposefully.I am not blaming local guides but chances are there. But yes if we see positive side quality of data will be increased.I did not try this so far after using it i may change my opinion.

Level 6

How about google maps on Iphone? Are we able to edit?

Map history

Level 8

Great addition, but I don't seem to be receiving the requests. Is there a place in Maps that I can see pending requests for my area or viewed portion of the map?
