Earlier this week, we asked you to join us in adding wheelchair-accessibility information on Google Maps. Today, I’d like to suggest hosting an accessibility meet-up with fellow Local Guides. It’s a powerful—and fun!—way to make the world easier for everyone to navigate.

Organizing an accessibility meet-up is easy. It’s just like any other meet-up, but your focus will be sharing accessibility information. There are several ways to do this, so here are some useful tips:

Answer questions. Everyone at the meet-up can go to “Your contributions” in Google Maps, then tap “Answer questions about a place” to see questions about accessibility at places they’ve visited. It’s easy to answer these questions, and this guide can help. Consider printing it out for your attendees.

If you have an Android device, go on a mission. Your group can explore a neighborhood while adding wheelchair accessibility information to the places that need it most. Find places near you that are missing this info to share details.

Animated image of how missions appear on Google Maps for Android.Animated image of how missions appear on Google Maps for Android.

Share photos. A picture really does speak volumes, especially if you’re trying to tell if a place is accessible. Try to get photos of features like entrances and stairs. People with wheelchairs or walkers will appreciate being able to see these things before they visit.

Add info to all kinds of places. People often share details about restaurants, but accessibility is important everywhere. Consider meeting at a museum, park, or beach to scope out features that are important for people with mobility issues.

Remember, this information benefits all kinds of people, not just those who use wheelchairs. Families with strollers, people with injuries, and anyone carrying luggage appreciates things like wide entrances, restrooms without stairs, and elevators.

Level 3+ Local Guides, ready to host a meet-up?

Submit your details to get started. Then, be sure to share your event on social using #LocalGuides and #a11y (the global hashtag for accessibility).

Dear TaciC,
That's a great move! I am always very much interested and enthusiastic about this kind of meetup. Anyway, I am serving as a local guide in Taiwan. In particular, the capital region (Taipei City). I hope it's gonna be a great fun meeting among ourselves.

Thanks and let's do it!

Thanks for the opportunity to host this event in my local area. This will be my first hosted event and I look forward to providing better information to our local tourism business operators since our terrain is quite mountainous. Hoping to more accurately update many establishments listed on Google Maps with accessibilty details. Thanks again. Dean.

Great job guys! I am from India, based in Kolkata. Want to join this initiative by local guide by hosting a photo walk in my city. Is there anyone from Kolkata, India; so that we can plan together and make is a success.

If anyone want to join me in this mission let me know. Your help is much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I will try and post 3 places a day that are wheelchair accessible

Hi everyone i am a local guide from Pakistan who hasn't been much online on Connect.. but i would love to do a meetup around accessiblity. Since many people are not that aware around how restaurants and places can make their areas more accessible to disabled people, I was wondering if i could do an event around this with my friend who is a motivational speaker but faces this when she goes out.. This will help build empathy in people while at the same time making them understand the physical requirements needed to make places cater to all people.

@TraciC I'll be hosting one in Kampala before the summit but you said we can to "Our contributions” in Google Maps, then tap “Answer questions about a place" and I'm not seeing such a button. Is it only on Android or it's the same as "Check the facts" button on Google Maps for Desktop? Thanks

Level 9

@TraciC Thanks! I really appreciate the effort done by Google and local guide programme to improve accessibility for other by helping out!

Very interesting! I'm very glad to doing this.

Hello everyone, I love everything that is being done from Google. We have a volunteer work group that we collaborate with the Malaga Accessibility Area.
We made accessible tourist routes for people with functional diversity, this morning we visited a park in the city that is very well adapted for people with disabilities The Park of the West of Malaga. A wonder, communication book, play park adapted to children with mobility problems .......
The working group is called TOCA Malaga Tourism Leisure Culture Malaga. This morning we consulted the people in charge of the park and we would like to hold a meetup, we would organize it to make it TOCA volunteers, technical staff of accessibility and people with disabilities who collaborate to value us the areas of the park. What do you think? But I have doubts.Parque del Oeste MalagaParque del Oeste Malaga

@tirthankarmaiti159 I recommend creating a meet-up and you might be surprised how many other Local Guides there are in Kolkata, too! 🙂

@NoonSayNabeel You sure can host a meet-up with your friend and use g.co/localguides/meetup as long as the meet-up is indeed related to Local Guides. I'm sure your friend has lots of great information to share. 🙂

@AlMutebi You will be prompted to answer questions about a place unless you've already answered all questions possible for all the places you've visited (if location history is on), reviewed or saved. Have you made sure you have the latest version of your app?

@colibri72 It sounds like you know a group of people who are perfect for adding wheelchair-accessible information to Google Maps, very cool! If, however, you're going to use g.co/localguides/meetup (which I hope you do) your meet-up is open to all Local Guides and not just those people.

@SaraI Best of luck with your first meet-up and glad to see you have Internet as some of my friends in Palm Beach are without power still. Eep! 😕

@MichaelPonciano I'm sorry I missed your earlier post but thank you for taking the time to comment here on the post. It sounds like you have a great event coming up this weekend at a great venue for a fantastic cause. If you are going to invite Local Guides to join you, I recommend including specific information on where they may meet you as well as what you will do together. Perhaps you can to a nearby establishment that is accessible to celebrate a great event? 🙂

I also started a meet-up for my city, for a lunch break accessibility data collection walk. I didn't see any other guides in my area, but I'm hoping it gets seen here and where I've posted on social media. Here's hoping!

Hi @TraciC

I need to ask a few question:

1.- How you could know that a place is accesible without to open all , Could the place have a sign to know , its easy and quick. But as well I would like used a diferent one , always its use the wheelchair but not all of us used wheelchair, our group there are another good for all discapacity.

2.- I need to do an  in Local guide conect account to host a meetup , ??

3.- When we host a meet up , we know is for everone.

4.- We are a group call Toca , I like to organice the meet up from a TOCA account but its a inferior level , I am the  coordinador of a group. But we are a group we work all together.

5.- Its posible to give a level o accesibility , as 100% totally accesible and 10 % less accesible .Perhaps its complicate .

6,. we need to ask a write consent to the place where we meet up . we want to do in the  park and sourrouning.

We are so excited to host the meet .

@colibri72

Hi there!

1) While signs would be ideal, it's best to determine the accessibility of a place with a personal experience and/or by calling a place.

2) You can get started in hosting a meet-up by preparing the information and then visiting g.co/localguides/meetup and clicking "Host a meet-up" to get started in inputting your information.

3) Great! 🙂

4) Participating in the Local Guides program requires being an individual and not a brand, business or organization, so I recommend creating the meet-up and participating in Local Guides as yourself. 🙂

5) It does sound complicated as not all places are 100% accessible, but by answering questions (yes, this place has a wheelchair-accessible entrance but no it does not have a wheelchair-accessible restroom) and describing in reviews or with photos, it will be so helpful.
6) If you are hosting your event in public, you likely do not need permission but I do not know all laws around the world so best to be safe than sorry and always respect all local laws, as I am sure you were planning to anyway. 🙂

I look forward to hearing how your meet-up goes!!

@Chris_ It is available for both Android and iOS.

You’ll see questions for places in your location history or places you’ve recently rated or reviewed. It’s possible that your location history is turned off, learn how to turn it on.

In the meantime, you can:

  • Try to review a place and reload your contributions tab
  • Add a place to your timeline and reload your contributions tab
  • Rate a place and reload your contributions tab

Hello!

Im sooo new to this...but perchance, is there a "place" we can go that has places centralized w cities, communities...a place to START the process? I'm from the Bay Area, California & the meetups search bar doesn't have Bay Area. And if u live here too, u know how much it means to have it all under Bay Area. ☺

Hi @TraciC, really awesome initiative. You should give the Swedish Google team a call and ask them to join forces with the Swedish accessibility database initiative (TD). TD already has detailed information, measurements and pictures about accessibility on over 6500 sites in Sweden.

Googler

Hi @NatalieRoseWutGoes Thanks for sharing your feedback. This isn't something currently available as the meet-up site requires cities over areas, but I'm happy to log that feedback. I also recommend sharing it under "Feedback and Feature Requests" here on Connect so others can share their thoughts, too. Thank you!

@Jakobengdahl Thanks for sharing!

Hi,

I was advised to raise this question in the accessability thread (this is the right place I assume??)

Have attached photos to show the key points (free standing, not part of building , mobility and access to the public, for elderly and disabled)

The Hong Kong Govt is adding lift services for elderly and anyone to use instead of stairs.
This is also accessible for handicapped and wheelchairs.
There is NO category to add a PUBLIC LIFT

There is a category for PUBLIC TOILET.

THESE lifts (elevators) are being installed in many places in Tsing Yi island,  Hong Kong,  because of the elevations between places and the population is aging. i.e. old people have trouble getting up and down stairs, and long detours.

I have added a few places under "missing places" but could only use the category "Lift Services" which is a business not a public lift for anyone to use provided by the Government.

What category to use ?
I have not found it on Google yet

ps: i have photos of the lifts, but can't add them to maps.

Lifts are only being installed over the last 2 years. i.e. they are very NEW

I posted it as a general quetion, originally: https://www.localguidesconnect.com/t5/How-do-I/HOW-TO-ADD-Public-lifts-and-elevators-for-people-to-g...wheelchair access, and public accesswheelchair access, and public accessvery new, July2017, provides access for older, disabled, and general public, for whom stairs are not an optionvery new, July2017, provides access for older, disabled, and general public, for whom stairs are not an option

Hi @Cinnamon. I've answered your question on the post you shared and the answer is: The category of "Lift Service" or "Elevator Service" (depending on your language) is indeed the correct category for public elevators.

@Sariga That's amazing! Was your meet-up around accessibility? May I suggest adding information to the title of your meet-up and maybe a link to the Connect post, too? 🙂
