Earlier this week, we asked you to join us in adding wheelchair-accessibility information on Google Maps. Today, I’d like to suggest hosting an accessibility meet-up with fellow Local Guides. It’s a powerful—and fun!—way to make the world easier for everyone to navigate.

Organizing an accessibility meet-up is easy. It’s just like any other meet-up, but your focus will be sharing accessibility information. There are several ways to do this, so here are some useful tips:

Answer questions. Everyone at the meet-up can go to “Your contributions” in Google Maps, then tap “Answer questions about a place” to see questions about accessibility at places they’ve visited. It’s easy to answer these questions, and this guide can help. Consider printing it out for your attendees.

If you have an Android device, go on a mission. Your group can explore a neighborhood while adding wheelchair accessibility information to the places that need it most. Find places near you that are missing this info to share details.

Share photos. A picture really does speak volumes, especially if you’re trying to tell if a place is accessible. Try to get photos of features like entrances and stairs. People with wheelchairs or walkers will appreciate being able to see these things before they visit.

Add info to all kinds of places. People often share details about restaurants, but accessibility is important everywhere. Consider meeting at a museum, park, or beach to scope out features that are important for people with mobility issues.

Remember, this information benefits all kinds of people, not just those who use wheelchairs. Families with strollers, people with injuries, and anyone carrying luggage appreciates things like wide entrances, restrooms without stairs, and elevators.

Level 3+ Local Guides, ready to host a meet-up?

Submit your details to get started. Then, be sure to share your event on social using #LocalGuides and #a11y (the global hashtag for accessibility).

Hi @HelloSamsonR. That's the spirit! Please note that the team loves this idea but we are only able to approve individual meet-ups and not global meet-ups. We'll be posting a list of all accessibility-themed meet-ups next week, though and would love to include one for Nigeria. 🙂

Great idea.

Level 9

@TraciC This is indeed a great idea to work on to make this world an amazing place to everyone. @NirajBhusal  let's work on this! We are also running "Monument Month". More activities = more fun. @OSAMA Please keep us updated about the event in your city on this and how it goes.

In Nepal a lot to do with accessibility and pedestrian navigation. We can begin this initiative from this month and go on until we complete. What do you think @RupendraNeupane@Surendra@SovitaD?

Level 10

@TraciC This is a great initiative. I will organize a meetup in Kalutara to check the accessibility in the Government Institutes and public places. I am also hosting another two meetups this month to update the monument photos(in parallel with Monument Month initiative ) in Colombo, Sri Lanka. I will ask the participants to update the accessibility information.

@Sarojdhakal dai sure, lets do this initiative. @BishowvijayaP@Surendra bros.

Level 5

Great effort @TraciC. We will together to make this a success. Helping others in simplest way possible that's what we got. Let's do this.

Level 8

@TraciC

Can we try this idea?

If we found a or any place with big or enough parking area. We meet the owner of the place ask a permission to make a wheelchairs parking and an easy access sign.

If got a deal, we printed the mark on the place as the owner gave to us.

If didn't get a deal we try in other place. Hope we can open their mind in the future.

Just a little text.

Thanks

Hi! I am degoutam from India, get level 5. To achieve a proper local guide, suggest me what I have to do? Thanks to you all.

Googler

So glad everyone is excited about hosting meet-ups! 😄

Hi @George1. Thank you for sharing this information about Russia and I am happy to hear it is so well regulated.

@AgoesSantosa That is a lovely idea and well above what is expected of Local Guides. We only ask that Local Guides add wheelchair accessibility information to Google Maps but I'm sure a nice conversation may result in even more changes if possible.

Note: Due to the volume of private messages Googlers receive, I do not read or respond to private messages. Please post publicly so others may benefit from your discussion. If you require urgent assistance, please tag a Google Moderator. Thank you!.
Level 8

@TraciC

Yes, a little conversation can made a big deal and helpful.

Can starting by us.

It is very possible.

Level 9

this is inspiring @TraciC 🙂

Level 9

Hi @TraciC  Thanks for sharing.Great initiative. I will organize a meetup in any place.

Level 10

This is a great idea @TraciC. We are always providing accessibility informations on an individual basis and are aslo willing to give it a specific preferance by hosting a meet up. We will be checking such informations this September in our activities under 'International month of Monumetnts'.

We believe on the notion: 'Together we can. If we don't then who else?' Such kind of initiations by localguideconnect makes us feel very proud of being a local guide. Thank you so much.

I am in @RupendraNeupane bro. 🙂

Level 4

I would be willing to bet that a local guide in Savannah, GA, already has a meet-up set. Is there anyway to find out so I don't duplicate their efforts and we can work together?

Level 7

I will set up a small meeting in my local area to hand out leaflets on accessibility.

Level 8

Yes We will try

Very few buildings, offices and restaurants which are wheelchair accessible in India

Great idea!  So happy to help!

Level 9

Great guide @TraciC.  Do you have any other guides that help with questions and answers?  Such as "is this place chic?"  and so forth.  Thanks.

@TraciC I've never hosted a Meetup before, I've just added photos & answered questions. My son has MD, & this weekend there's MDA muscle walk happening in my area. People can donate or just walk, it's happening at the Texas rangers ballpark. We have a team for my son. My question is, would this count as a photo walk or a geo walk? There will be alot of wheelchairs, including my son's wheelchair. As this being my 1st, I wanted to make sure this was okay, before posting.

Level 6

Interessante!

Level 4

Sure! Will definitely join.  Can i have further guidance about the meet up? @TraciC

Level 5

I love the idea but there doesn't seem to be any other local guides in my city. How do I check? Thanks in advance
