This month, we’ve invited you to join us in adding wheelchair-accessibility information on Google Maps. A fun way to do that is to hold a meet-up with fellow Local Guides.

It’s been invigorating reading how excited — and passionate — you all are about helping others!

So far, 70 Local Guides from around the world have organized meet-ups focused on wheelchair accessibility — and that’s just in the past two weeks.

Coming up, over 120 meet-ups are on the calendar in places places like Gujarat, India, Tomsk, Russia, Vancouver, Canada, and Batticloa, Sri Lanka. Check out g.co/localguides/meetup to see if a meet-up is being hosted near you. If not, why not host one yourself?

When you’re out and about at one of these meet-ups or contributing wheelchair-accessibility information to Google Maps, don’t forget to share your discoveries on social using #LocalGuides and #a11y.

The Local Guides team is hosting meet-ups in Copenhagen, Surabaya, Buenos Aires, Santiago, London, New York, and Tokyo. We’ll be posting highlights and livestreams on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, and YouTube, so be sure to follow along.

As for me, I’ll be co-hosting tomorrow’s meet-up in Buenos Aires. I can’t wait to share my experience meeting Local Guides and learning about accessibility in the city!

I have put in a meet-up in Berlin. Myself being in a wheelchair I know how difficult it is to navigate through google-maps having no clue about accessibility. Germany is not like other countries where accessibility for all people is a standard. Hope a lot local guides and others will join the meeting.

Hello @TraciC,

I hope you are doing well!

My name is Guerman Botten and I am an Accessibility Consultant at AbilityNet. I recently received and accepted an invitation to the wonderful Local Guides meet-up on the 28th of September in London which you are organising, focusing on adding accessibility information on Google Maps. I am very much looking forward to attending, but was wondering if it would at all be possible to bring along another member from the AbilityNet team?

We are all very passionate about enhancing accessibility and feel that this would be an incredible opportunity to help out further!

Googler

Hi @GuermanB. Glad to hear you are excited to attend. As noted on the event page, guests are not currently allowed at these Google-hosted meet-ups. We're excited to hear that AbilityNet is interested in what we're doing, however, as I shared in a post above, we're not currently partnering externally but I'll be sure to take note of your organization's information for future consideration. Thank you. 🙂
