It’s here for you: make and share lists on Google Maps for desktop

Former Google Contributor

[Updated Dec 18] Currently, you can't create or manage lists on Google Maps with a GSuite account.

Local Guides got the first chance to create custom lists of places on Google Maps for mobile. Then, we added the ability to share your lists with family and friends. Many of you have told us that lists are useful and fun—and they’d be even better if you could make them on your desktop or laptop, too.

We heard you, and we have exciting news: Lists have arrived on your desktop. Now when you find places on Google Maps, you can save them to lists that will sync across your devices.

 Here’s how it works:

  • Find a place on Google Maps
  • Tap “SAVE”
  • Add it to one of your existing lists, or create a new one

Now, when you go to “Your places” on Google Maps for Android, iOS, or the web, you’ll see places that you saved to lists from any device. And just like on mobile, you can click the three dots to share your lists with family and friends.

Say you’re planning a trip and searching for museums, restaurants, and shops near your hotel. As you find places you want to visit on Google Maps, save them in a list. When you arrive in the neighborhood and take out your phone, you’ll have an itinerary ready to go.

You can use lists to join our celebration of local businesses. Save your favorite stores to a list as you take photos, then share the list with friends and family. Or, make it public so everyone can see your great picks.

How will you use lists for desktop? Tell the community in the comments, and post your public lists for others to follow.

I found a place on Google search and it doesn’t have a “SAVE” button. Why not?

Right now, you can save places that you find on Google Maps. Lists aren’t currently available on Google.com searches on desktop, though they are available on searches on your mobile device.

I’m on Google Maps and I still don’t see the “SAVE” button. How come?

This feature is rolling out over a few weeks. If it isn’t yet visible for you, it will be soon.

How do I make my best lists public?

  • Go to “Your places
  • Click the three dots on the list you want to make public
• Select “Sharing options” and choose “PUBLIC”

Now, people will be able to find your list on your public profile.

Level 8

Its really a lovely feature.... I have been using it mark my important places... Thanks for bringing it to desktop also...

Level 4

It's too helpful when things are available for all devices. Because we can access things as fast as possible.

Level 8
My feedback is that I think it would be very useful to attribute different icons or even just different colors to custom lists poi. Thank you
Level 10

Thanks @HelloJess

Awesome feature and update

Level 5

Level 8

Still don't see this feature on my Desktop. Slightly confusing. Any info on how much this is already rolled out @HelloJess?

I love this solution thnx

Still missing out on the lists though. 😕 Only starring places is possible, not saving to lists. Is that feature still being rolled out or is there sth. wrong here?

Level 7

Been waiting for this, and have been using it. Thank you!

This really excites me, so I made a whole bunch of great lists for dining etc. Yeah, for those living in reach of the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex here. KurtwVs

Great function to create  custom lists. I love it.

But it would be perfect if I could set  a different colour for every custom list I created!  So I can see on maps by the colour to which list the location belongs.

Level 6

Great function thanks your advice

Level 8

Took quite a while for me to show up, but now I have it! Yay! Thx @HelloJess and team.

Level 7

Thanks, @HelloJess!  I created a list and would like to share it publicly by url via a blog.  Am I understanding currectly that anyone can then add places to the list once they follow the list?  If this is true, can someone who is following the list also edit the list...or, is the list creator the only one who can edit a list?

Well done for this new feature.

Level 10

It's always great when new features and functions are added to improve the overall ability of the app. Keep up the great work!

Level 6

@HelloJess This is a great feature. I've been using custom lists for a couple of months.  One of my lists has alot of places (700) and I am finding the usability of large lists can be improved.  For me, I can see all of the places on the map but for end users that I've shared the list to, they only see the places in batches and it paginates as they scroll through them.  Is there a way for them to view them all as well?  Or at least paginate through the places in the currently viewed area that the user is actively viewing on Google Maps?  Can authors have the ability to export this to KML?

It would also be great to choose a colour for custom lists so that if you can overlay several types on one map with a visual indicator to which list they belong to.

Level 10

Hi @HelloJess, how long will G Suite users can manage and create lists in Maps? I am using G Suite account, until now i can't manage and crate list in Maps.
