Introducing new badges on Google Maps

Google Moderator

[Updated on Nov 20] Badges are now available for all Local Guides on Android and iOS.

[Updated on Oct 11] Badges are coming soon for everyone, but we’re experiencing a delay on Google Maps for Android. Stay tuned for more info in the coming weeks.

Do you love taking photos? How about reviewing the places you visit? Maybe you’re into exploring new areas, or adding details about places to help others get around.

Local Guides share their knowledge in many ways. That’s why, starting today, we’re introducing badges to recognize different kinds of top contributors on Google Maps.

Here are the four new badges you can earn right now:

Reviewer

You’ll earn this badge by writing detailed reviews that help people decide where to go.

Photographer

This badge is for sharing photos of places, so others can see the world on Google Maps.

Trailblazer

Here’s the badge for exploring. Earn it by being the first to add, review, or take a photo of a place.

Fact Finder

Earn this badge by checking facts, making edits, and answering simple questions about places to help people find the right information on Google Maps.

By sharing more, you can get upgrades for each one. For example, a Novice Photographer can become an Expert Photographer, and then reach legendary status as a Master Photographer. Your past contributions will be factored in too, so some of you may have already reached that status!

This feature is rolling out over the next few weeks. To see if it’s on your device right now, go to “Your contributions” on Google Maps for Android or iOS. There, you’ll see your progress toward each badge. Tap each one to see how to earn the more advanced version of your new badge.

@SampsonF this will help @LucioV 👍👌👍

Level 9

Thanks @SampsonF this helps. I think that the issue here is that some of these badges require very heavy queries. So maybe the jobs will run for months.

Level 8

Merci @SampsonF,

Level 7

@LucioV "So maybe the jobs will run for months."
I'm thinking that you are suggesting that it will take months to get to the top tier of each badge? This is not a bad thing! We're Local Guides anyway. It gives us something to look forward to. I think the biggest [badge] concern will be the 50 review likes as this is utterly and completely out of our hands.

Level 9

@Gabisdaddi no, I think that the jobs for calculating each badge for each user are highly time consuming! Consider, more than 50 million of LGs, and for each of them the jobs should determine wether if  you have the first photo of a place, the first review, etc.etc.

Level 8

@LucioV  Are you referring to the computer power Google will have to use to make the ongoing calculations?

Level 9

Yes @davidcox, some of these badges are based on insight that, to me, look very hard to compute.

Level 10

Personally I believe that there is scope of further refininment of new badge systems. In addition, Badges on connect may also be included some where or as a seperate badge. @LucioV

Level 10

LGs from India has now started reporting receive the New Badge System.

Finally got the new badges update today. @HelloJess

Level 8

Thank you @SampsonF, I still can't see the badges, but I think I already completed most of them.

Level 9

I'd rather google spent their resources resolving the edit algorithm than rolling out badges, 😉☺

Perhaps the processors are calculating how many of the 50million LGs are eligible for which badges 😉😉😉

Level 8

@HelloJess

Screenshot_20171117-190120.png

Level 10

I still can't see the badges... It's probably because I'm a beta tester ;)

Level 8

Bonjour @SergeySud

Level 10

Hi @Vvincent

I don't really need these badges (I will not lose anything and will not get anything, I will not do less or more for the project), but I find it unacceptable the deployment the function for almost 1.5 months.

Level 8
Hi @SergeySud, Santa Claus just called me and said : don't worry, you'll received your update before Christmas :) It's just a new funny feature and as you said don't provide fundamental changes. Be patient we'll get it soon or later !
Level 10

Hi @BoyScout

I don't worry at all about badges. I just worry that it was announced too early.

In Russia we say "Don't say "Up!" until you jump over", the same in English "Never cackle till your egg is laid" :)

Level 8

@SergeySud

Level 9

I saw my badges!!!! @HelloSamsonR showd me in whatsapp :D

Level 9

Yeah if you need to see your badges(anxious) to just know how well your contributions to the local guides program have been so far, you can do that by asking a local guide close to you who has badges to show you what yours look like too. What I mean is this, anyone who has badges would be able to see who has and who don't have badges. Just as I did to my friend @LucioV who doesn't have the badges yet.

Level 8

Pretty shocking that such updates would take 2 months and over to get implimented and in batches. I can't even believe or comprehend.

Level 8

Bonjour @HelloJess ,

Level 8
Salut @Vvincent, IOS ou Android ton Nexus 6 ?
Level 8

Bonjour @BoyScout ,

Mon Nexus 6 sous Android 100%. Pas de surcouche opérateurs ni fabriquant.

Level 10

I think now new badges is to be provided only to beta test users.

To rest of users it has been rolled out?

Level 8

Bonjour @ProfArunCM,

Question pour les bêta testeurs :

Vincent (France)

Level 10

Hi @ProfArunCM

No, it's not related to beta testing. I'm a beta tester, and I haven't badges.

Level 8

Level 10

@SergeySud

No mean to say those who are Beta Testers are still yet to get new badge system.

Level 10

@Vvincent

Do not know whether Beta Testers have got new badges?

Any update from you side.

@LUCIOV

Level 9

@ProfArunCM Yes @LucioV got new badges...but not because he is a beta tester, I am the beta tester also but no new badges for me yet...

This update took a long time for showing up...It's not something important but still :)

Level 10

@DraganKajtez
