How to see when you’re near places that are missing info

Former Google Contributor

One of the top ideas from this year’s Summit is ready for you to try: Turn on Proximity Alerts on Google Maps for Android, and you’ll get notified when you’re near places that are missing info.

Here’s how:

  • Go to Your contributions
  • Tap Uncover missing info
  • Tap the three dots on the right and select Proximity Alerts
  • Turn on Notifications

Second, modify your alerts.Caption: Two mobile phones displaying how to set Proximity Alerts. First, tap the three dots on the right then select Proximity Alerts. Second, modify your alerts.

Now, you’ll get an alert when you’re near places that are missing info on Google Maps. Tap each one, and you’ll be able to add info like business hours, phone numbers, and categories, as well as photos and reviews.

What do you think of Proximity Alerts? Let us know in the comments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get these notifications on my iOS device?

Right now, this feature is only available on Google Maps for Android.

Can I control when and where I get these notifications?

You can choose whether your device will vibrate or play a sound when you get these notifications. You can also set it so you won’t get notifications in certain places (like home or work), or during certain hours.

Will I get Local Guides points for adding info with Proximity Alerts?

For each contribution, you’ll earn the same number of points that you would by adding it any other way on Google Maps.

Hi @HelloJess

Is it confidential information, or can I share information about new function to communities? It's available anywhere or in specific regions? In all languages?

Former Google Contributor

@SergeySud Feel free to share this with your communities!

Thank you @TraciC for bringing me here.

@HelloJess On iOS there is feature of “Uncover missing info” most of my info I add especially websites are pending and think this will make Local Guides to skip beacuse it’s pending most of the time can be approve or later “not applied”

here is an example of myscreen shot of my pending after filling missing info

Fantastic feature. I have turned it on right away. Isn't this so much better than to do it on our on, to find place, than add. This way missing info just pop-up in front of u and u add everything that's missing. Excellent new feature 🤗🤗😁 Bravo!!!

@HelloJess, that's a great option. I surely will give it a try. I am little confused about the 'active hours' notification. Does it mean when I want to be notified about the proximity or is it something else? I'm sorry if I have asked a stupid question.

Level 8

Good feature. Hope it will be released for iOS soon.

Shared with my community!

Sounds good, @HelloJess, we'll see how it works in practice!

Not sure about the ringtone though. Will it play my default ring tone? I'd sound rather stupid walking up and down in my city and playing AC/DC all the time! 🙂

Level 8

Thank you for bringing us thus great news, @HelloJess!

I wish the opposite of Excluded Places can be added.  That is, I can manually add Places to a nearby alerts list.  So whenever I come close to that place, Maps will alert me.  It will allow us to "bookmark" Places to have a closer look when we are nearby.

Level 10

@HelloJess it's a good news for them ,who love edits. (I am included)

I am going to turn it on, if any thing, sure will be asked here.

Thanks @OSAMA for mention me

Have a good day

Salut @HelloJess,

C'est une excellente idée. Cela sera plus facile pour contribuer sur des informations manquantes, lorsqu'on est sur place.

C'est activé et ça sera testé ce soir.

Will try it out. Thanks for the update.

Thanks for sharing the information with us . It is defenitly great .

I would like map to be more smarter .

It  would have been better to have little artificial inteligence to identify selfi photos from contributors , Duplicate photos etc is shown points .

Mistake can also happen i have added photos to one location later it will promt to add photo i will again upload then also the map is not shows it is duplicate .

Would love to be in this community of real service to others for finging information

Great @HelloJess

I wonder, I could now when i get alerts..later

Level 10

I am wondering how it works in real life.

Level 8

Ah ha! Thank you so much! This was laid out perfectly! Great tutorial!!

Former Google Contributor

@SoniaK Those are hours in which you'd like to receive notifications. Outside of those hours you won't receive notifications of places nearby that are missing info. I hope that helps!

Former Google Contributor

@YK1001 Great feedback! I'll be sure to share with the team.

It's on @HelloJess!!

I'll give some feedback as soon as I try it for a few days, I was doing this for a while in "manual" mode and it was boring and demotivating so I'm excited to try it!!

Thanks for this upgrade!

Bonjour  à tous guides locaux.

Salut @HelloJess

Thanks for the interesting & new feature.  It also helps to label places that do not exist.  It would be helpful to

add other choices, or the absence of such in certain areas....for example, my local beach park does not

have a phone number.  There may be a general city website, but it is not specific to that location.

Thanks again,

Paul 🙂
