Tips for writing great reviews

  • Be informative and insightful: Be specific and relevant to the place you’re reviewing, and describe what other visitors are likely to experience. Highlight what makes the place special, and try to share something novel and new. From signature dishes to secret sale racks, reviews should reveal the unique experiences that places offer.
  • Keep it real: Be authentic. Review your own experience, and explain why you liked or disliked the place. Try to be as accurate as possible, and include both the positive and negative aspects of your visit.
  • Be respectful: Not every experience with a place is going to be perfect. Sometimes you’ll want to share negative feedback. Even if you’re frustrated, make sure your criticism is constructive. Business owners often use feedback to improve their offerings.
  • Reviews not General Commentary: At times certain locations may become the subject of larger public debate or conversation due to recent news coverage or current events. While we respect and value your opinion, Local Reviews are not meant for social or political commentary. We think there are other forums that are more suited to those kinds of conversations, like blogs or social networks. Please write about your firsthand experience with the place and not general commentary on the place in relation to recent news.
  • Write with style: People will pay attention when you write thoughtful reviews. Keep them readable and avoid excessive capitalization or punctuation. Use good grammar, check your spelling, and avoid profanity. Choose the right length - a paragraph is great. Be creative and have fun!

Muy buena información,  y estoy de acuerdo en hacer reseñas de alta calidad para ayudar a otros a tomar mejores decisiones y no confundirlos,  me gusta escribir reseñas agregar fotos de lugares que visito

@Corrie it's been excellent several days recently with all the new features! Please keep them coming.

2 related ideas:

1. It would be great to be able to see which of your own reviews are the most helpful by adding a ranking filter somewhere here

1475772324000.jpg

 2. Also in terms of a negative (or should we say constructive 🙂 feedback I actually think that it may potentialy damage a business and we need to give a business owner a second chance in most cases.

So it would be cool and pretty innovative (as I don't think any other review service allows to do this yet) to enable Local Guides (as well as all other users) to send a private message to business owners that no one else can see and give them that chance to improve their product or service. And it would be nice to give Local Guides an option to send this constructive feedback anonymously to be 100% honest.

The dream would be to create this collaborative and productive ecosystem between businesses and Local Guides via Google Maps. And I'd love to be part of making this happen.

I think it's a great idea.

Since I do 99 % of my reviews on an iPad, I can't wait for it to be enabled on the iOS app.

Great idea and ready to contribute and challenge.  Keep it up and all the best.

I like @IvanLondon 's suggestion about the feedback,  I don't like to rate a location low but want to be honest.

@IvanLondon while I agree with most of what you said, I don't like the idea of some mechanism for providing goodwill back from the retailer (or whatever) to the local guide as this could be seen as "cash for comment", something which could be easily abused. I'm sure it will still happen but to promote it via a feature would devalue the comments, I feel.

Nice add.

How this information will be used by G? Will review in future be filtered out depending on their score? We know that bayesan method is used to create the overall score of a business, will the "thumbs up/down" will be used to further weight single score? Hope this will not lead to a thumbs war between local guides!!!! 😄

@IvanLondon and @MikeNotMike in fact reviews and money aren't good friends. This is a delicate issue.

It is very nice the new button but it would be more useful if we could sort the reviews by language(something that also happens in tripadvisor). It would be really great for anyone to choose firstly the reviews in his own language and then the one in the languages he speaks. So you could try to do something about this. Thanx.

@Linda_F hi Linda, thanks a lot, your summary is spot on again! 🙂

@Corrie Hi CorrieD, hope you had a nice weekend. I've started to use this feature and it's great!

A couple of suggestions/ideas:

1. I really like a pop-up message saying 'Thank you for for your feedback' (as per printscreen below). The only thing is that I didn't notice this message for several times in the beginning, so maybe changing its color to green would make it more noticeable.

1476111684495.jpg

 2. And the great thing is that people are starting to use this new feature more and more, as I keep coming across reviews voted as helpful. I just thought that maybe adding a word 'helpful' even to those voted reviews would be beneficial for those people who are new to this feature and who don't know what it is about. Even though it's pretty easy to guess 🙂 Here is a  printscreen to illustrate my suggestion
