Give Feedback on Questions in Maps

Former Google Contributor

Feature Request: "We know when a question in Google Maps is good or bad. We want to let you know."

Thanks to all your feedback on questions, we've streamlined the process to escalate a bad question to our product team. Next time you see an awkward translation or question that is off topic for the place, you can click the flag in the lower right, select the category that is most applicable, and optionally include a more detailed description of the problem. Use the hashtag #LocalGuides in the description to let the team know it's coming from a Local Guide.

Your feedback helps us to improve the user experience for users in every country, and for every place. This feature is currently available in the latest version of the Google Maps Android app.

@iyudhi You and your fellow Local Guides in Indonesia brought this issue to our attention in January. In addition to making improvements to the questions themselves, we wanted to improve the process for getting your feedback. Hope this new update is helpful 🙂

It will be nice addition to categorise  questions on googles Map.#local guide

@Corrie Is there a chance that the flag could be put in the same 'window/panel' as the Question itself? My eyes are focused on the question, and the three possible answers and if I'm struggling to understand the question, I would just hit on 'Not sure' as the way out rather than search for a not-so-obvious 4th option. That is before I knew about the flag, of course... but for general users, that will be the case!

Can't report on iOS. We don't have this button.

@Corrie wow! That was a quick turnaround! And the person who pointed it out got credit and feedback from the team. I Must say I'm pleasantly surprised! You guys are spoiling us! And it feels

Long past are the days when we shouted at the wind asking for features or solutions and the feedback we got was the idea getting implemented 2 years after, without much fanfare. Those were the days of Google wave and the Google Apps account migration kit so the Google Apps users that wanted to use their custom domain for sign on to G+ or migrate G+ data from our Gmail account to our shiny new custom domain..... Hah so plz, more spoiling, less posting.

Now I'm so happy I'll write at least 5 long reviews... Haha see? I it works!

How would one best make suggestions to changes in the wording of a question or 2?

The one top of mind to me is something along the lines of "Does this restaurant have counter service?". In many parts of the world, this ("counter service") refers to being able to order at a central location and then finding an open seat - as with most "fast food" eateries in the USA - as opposed to being seated and a server taking (and delivering) your order to your table ("table service"). In other parts of the world, this ("counter service") refers to actually seating at a counter (much like a bar, or a classic American 50's diner), where you can watch the service staff and cooks prepare your meal.

@Ale5ander That is correct. "This feature is currently available in the latest version of the Google Maps Android app."

@HLecuanda_H-Lo Thank you! We will do our best to keep it up. Hopefully you have seen the wave of new features we are testing/rolling out. While we can't always tie it back to an individual post like I was able to do here, we really do take your feedback to heart. It takes time to implement changes, but we do 🙂

@Benjet415 You can actually enter text in the optional field, this is where you can add suggested rewording or translations or just give context on what makes something awkward or a bad fit. Your example is great feedback to include.

@Corrie so I decided to try it, got an awkward question about a place and followed the above procedure. Touched the flag thingy, which gave me categories about why the question could be wrong for the place. GOOD! but then I got this:

Screenshot_2016-10-04-09-34-23.png

I'm all too familiar with it. That's the screen I get when some apps crash. But maps seemed to be happily chugging along, so now I'm confused 😕 did reporting the issue crash maps or a part of it? Could be, my device is almost EOL (my trusty Nexus 4 will have to die before I change it for anything else) or perhaps that's where I'm supposed to further detail my feedback. If so, maybe it needs to be clarified on the form. Are crash logs necessary? That was the scary part of the form.

Thx in advance! U guys made me fall in love with Google all over gain. Our relationship had been a bit cold as of late n.n

@Corrie Did just that!

Level 9

@HLecuanda_H-Lo I think this is the normal/expected behavior as it seems the G-Maps team is re-purposing the basic Google/Andriod feedback form 😉

@Benjet415 wonderful! I did get thrown off because I've only seen that screen as the last deathly gasps of an agonizing app while it de-rezzes into a milion tiny crystal cubes.

Haha I think I had too much coffee n.n

@Benjet415 @HLecuanda_H-Lo Thanks both. I will pass along that the feedback screen is confusing given its resemblance to other screens. Thanks!

Level 3

@Corrie Will this feature ever be avaliable to us iOS Local Guides?

Level 4

I have a question about the Quention feature: Are we able to go back to edit our answer for previous questions? For example, I might have said a certain place is not wheelchair accessible, then later found out it actually is. I would love to be able to change my answer for the benefit of the community.

Level 8

@HLecuanda_H-Lo Ah! We have a SwiftKey user in the audience! Just wanted to give you a shoutout for using SwiftKey.

This is a cool feature, but I agree with the comments about the flag being out of general view when we are focused right in the middle of the screen.

I think I saw this recently and might have pressed it just to see what it did. I will be using this more often as sometimes I do feel the questions are redundant.

Cheers,

Ryan

@Corrie Excellent feedback feature! Loving it. Thanks guys

Ghosh! I have answered so many qestions as not sure didnt know this options exists in the first place to comment on the question itself.

I suggest teh flag should be there somewhere on the question screen rather than in the corner, this will give a better visibility and option for the user to choose than to select a wrong option/ not sure answer.

Excellent! I can finally flag "Is this place festive" as a dumb question (yes, if it's Christmas or Hallowe'en, otherwise no!) or "Does this place serve alcohol?", when I'm reviewing a bar, as a bit... silly.

Thanks for listening!

Hola

I changed the language of my phone, now I noticed that in English (US) I find different questions. There questions available only in specific languages?

THANKS!!!!!

I was waiting for this because there are some questions about restaurants or places that i cannot answer because i m not abble to guess the meaning of the question. Sorry, my questions are in spanish so maybe questions are just badly translated. I hace some screenshots of those questions and i have to review them so i can tell exactly wich questions are. anyway, now i can say that wording is strange next time i see the question about organic food or if the place is retro. Well, maybe those questions are ok  and is just that places i go doesn't know what organic food is, like me, and none has vintage stuff around the walls 😉  (*comida organica, cultivada según estandares organicos... todo es organico, pero esto se refiere a que no usan pesticidas industriales sino naturales, por ejemplo*) later and go on with the fun helping all of us 🙂 and making the day more easier with google maps 🙂

@MorrisG, regarding translations, I also have the same complain that you have. Some questions in Portuguese are poorly translated.

This feature was long overdue. Thanks now that it is there. Nevertheless some questions are superfluous and amusing as well! I hope a revision is what is absolutely essential.

Level 5

I'm not sure how to answer a question like whether a restaurant **####** bar is suitable for kids or a government office has a drivethrough

Level 6

Is this feature avaialble on ordinary, PC-based, Google Maps?

Level 8

@ThomasLee, no it isn't.

JorgeS - Thanks. It thought that was the case. Maybe a better question: Can it be added?

Level 8

@ThomasLee, it can be added, yes. I don't if google will do it soon, but one thing is for sure, Google maps is becoming more similiar between mobile and PC.

@Corrie it's really helpful info that you shared here about questionare. I got confused many time to see this question on different places that is not relevent of. thanks

Level 7

@Corrie Hi CorrieD I was always wondering how these questions and answers are used, as I don't think the they are shown on the places descriptions yet. Maybe you could shed some light 🙂 if this is a secret feature in the making then of course we will just wait patiently for it to be revealed in due time.

thanks

@Corrie

This is for sure a very good feature. I will try to use it now. Thanks.

@IvanLondon You actually can see what a place is known for (and we are working to make this even better). You can see in the two screenshots I just took:

When I look at the place page of a place on Maps I see Doughnuttery is known for "Quick visit" and "Casual" (may sound familiar if you answer questions on Maps). If I tap on these I am taken to an attribute page where I can suggest changes the same way as answering questions, but in a bulk interface 🙂 You can read more in this blog post.

Click on the attributesClick on the attributes   See the attributes / suggest changesSee the attributes / suggest changes

@Corrie Great, thanks, I can see these attributes now!

Still waiting for the desktop platform to answer questions.

Feedback feature would also be beneficial in "add missing information"  section of Maps. Some locations will for all eternity have some information "missing", like parks without phone numbers for instance. Feedback feature would allow Local guides to tell Google "missing" information isn't really missing.

Level 8

This is great helpful idea.

esto es  colaborando entre todos la informacion sera mejor

Is this feature still missing from iOS Maps App?
