Flexible privacy settings for your Google Maps profile

Former Google Contributor

Caption: A screenshot showing flexible privacy settings for profiles in the Google Maps app.Caption: A screenshot showing flexible privacy settings for profiles in the Google Maps app.

Whether you review coffee shops or add information about health clinics, sharing your local knowledge on Google Maps helps others know where to go in your city. The info you post is listed in Your contributions so people who land on your profile can see your expertise and impact. For those who feel like that reveals too much, you now have the option to update your profile settings.

Here’s how you can hide the list of your contributions from your profile. Please note that each contribution is still visible on the relevant place page that appears on Google Maps.

Here’s how on Google Maps for Android and iOS:

  • Open the Google Maps App
  • Go to the menu on the top left and select Settings
  • Tap Personal content
  • Under “Profile settings,” turn off Show contributions on your profile

Here’s how on your desktop:

  • Open Google Maps
  • Go to the menu on the top left and select Your contributions
  • Click Contribute, then click Profile settings
  • Turn off Show contributions on your public profile

@kmajewski

Gracias.

In case anyone do not see the new "Profile Settings" options under "Your Contributions" using Desktop Maps, please click on the different tabs like Photos, Edits and then back to Contributions.

My "Profile Settings" initially is not visible, and then it is shown magically for me.

It's s very important feature I was waiting for. Thanks @kmajewski

@kmajewski this is a nice feature. Of late, in the discussion groups the topics are all about others points.

With this turn-off option, we can avoid unncessary comparision of points.

This feature is great, sometimes user is concern about their privacy , especially if everyone can see their history of contribution ( place, photo, location) . Thanks 🙂

But there is some concern about limitation on how Local Guides can help monitor some users' negative behaviour (spam content) contribution trough google map

Level 9

Wow @kmajewski thats great

Level 9

Thanks @kmajewski

for sharing the new features, many are facing this problem about their privacy.

@KarenVChin  what exactly is going on with your Socials?

I am asking because I am also having issues but with Maps mostly.

Level 8

Wow. It awasome.

Level 6

Feature is useful, but not flexible. There should be some reviews where you want to show yourself, and there should be some, where you can hide yourself. That flexibility is still not there. Whats the point in hiding yourself completely?? Is it worth it, I don't think so, being a local guide before even this feature was born, many of your near ones have already seen your reviews.

Level 8

Precisely @GEDRA  that was my very question.  I think that there might be a valid reason for google implementing this All-or-Nothing strategy.

I only wish sometimes they be more communicative when questions are being asked by the LG community here on Connect. Or if nothing else some sort of acknowledgement, perhaps?

It is true however, that when absolutely necessary we do get a response and first rate support.

50 million LGs... 🦄  after all

@kmajewski. How many of these 50 mills are actually members of CONNECT?

It's more helpful for those person who want not show own reviews.

Level 10

@DivyenduV so, what should be the target for "those person who want not show own reviews"?

Level 8

@SergeySud ! If Google will punished and decrease his/her level and point value is more convenient option. I think as a Local Guider, reviews is more helpful for particular location. Good reviews specified there what is around like and unlike.

Level 6

Thanks for the update!

Certamente uma ferramenta que irá ser bastante útil.

So door for spammers are open wide.

Now spammers can turn off this feature and we will not know that they spam only one time or they spam every time, everywhere.
How to report them?

How to recognize spammers?

I think the same like @SergeySud here  -- spam makers can say "We win".

This is one of the best features yet! I love traveling and sharing but I don't like people knowing where I am all the time and I also think it adds more anonymity to my contributions. Thank you so much for sharing this!

I so totally agree 🤔 with you  @Przemo

Good option🤣

Why are we unable to mark a review as private, thus displaying the review publicly but suppressing our identifiable name /profile information, as well as not displaying on our public profile.

If missed anything and we can, how does one perform such Magic?

@Khnowins You pointed out a very useful feature by which we can convert a public post (our own or others') into a private stuff for us. There can be a little simili or emoji button like ❤️, 🌺, 🙈 or any other, which can contain all our favorite and personal things, no one else can see 💍💎😍😁!

But in present settings, for creating private notes or stuff; you can use the 'save' & 'label' options. For easier access, make lists of saved places and add your personally useful notes to them. If you wish you can change the settings and make your private lists public and vice versa. You can also send or share your private or personal lists to someone you choose.

BRAVO at last ,one can be flexible, good progress. thanks

@kmajewski @VBenedict To expand upon what I wrote before, this feature would be best if it were granular and expanded to have a toggle on individual posts allowing the status / state change from public / private to "Anonymous" and yet still receive this relevant statistics and likes / kudos for said Post. Upon login, privately you would see the post on your feed however publicly it would be hidden. Completely disabling author attribution or identification. Thus your list of posts when this flag is set to "False" enabling the publicly displayed version, as well as the display of the authors handle / pseudonym - versus "True" permitting the authors retention of anonymity. If and when a feature like this is active, it gives the author more incentive to write reviews on individual places where they may not want the public to be aware of their patronage. For example someone may be apprehensive writing a review about a second hand clothing outlet, religious establishment, secret society, or treatment center. All things that someone may have valid positive or negative comments to post however does not want or would be concerned with the possibility of the Social Circle / Internet at Large being aware of. Where concerns of invalid, inaccurate or slanderous reviews exist, the public, registered user, or listing owner / administrator should retain abilities to mark that comment for third party verification. Just my two cents, In a world where there's no more cents.

Saludos cordiales.
