Exclusive: Moderation on Google Maps for desktop

Former Google Contributor

"Check the Facts" option now on Google Maps desktop"Check the Facts" option now on Google Maps desktop

Late last year, we launched Missions for Google Maps on Android devices. This feature connects Local Guides with contribution opportunities near them, making it easier to submit info that may be missing from a place’s Maps listing. In addition to submitting info, Local Guides can also verify suggestions that others have submitted. We got great feedback, with the top request being to bring the experience over to iOS and desktop devices.

Today we begin the process of expanding this feature by rolling out the ability to “Verify The Facts” on desktop Maps for all Level 5 Local Guides.

Try out moderation on desktop:

  1. Navigate to maps.google.com on a desktop device (make sure you’re logged into your Local Guides account).
  2. Open the = menu on the side, and click “Your Contributions”
  3. Click the “Check the facts” banner under your profile to see a list of places with pending edits awaiting your local expertise.
  4. Choose an edit you would like to moderate and select “Yes,” “No,” or “Not Sure.” You can also click the place’s title a second time to see the information Google has about the place, or click “Search This Place On Google” to find web results.

Over the next few weeks you can look forward to Missions for iOS, the ability to report issues on multiple road segments at once, and the option to report locations on the map that are missing roads.

We’ll continue to iterate on these and more features, working toward the end goal of creating a vibrant, in-product ecosystem for helping keep Google Maps data accurate and up-to-date. As always, we welcome your feedback as you help us test these new features before they are available to the public.

Hi @Corrie

Some of the listings I'm being asked to verify say, for example "Is this place permanently closed?" with three options:

YES
NOT SURE
NO

Which option should I pick if the real answer is 'This place has never existed at all (or existed but was not a mappable feature)'?

If I click YES then the place will stay on the map but be marked Permanently Closed. That is an incorrect edit, because it should be marked as Never Existed/Spam which would remove it from the map. If I click NO that's even worse as it stays on the map but is left as open.

It seems 'Check the facts' is too narrow in its scope. There needs to be a fourth option and/or a field to add notes

Level 9

Yes!!

It has already been enabled in Taiwan Maps.

@Corrie will we get LG points for it?

Works in Russian well 😃

Is this basically a "replacement" for mapmaker?

Is there a way to switch the viewport to another location? - ie. I am local to PHX but want to view an area in California.

I am a TC in GMB and would love to know how we can use this to troubleshoot.

Level 9

Yes i always check the details and correct it or ignore it

Thank you

Welcome addition to the desktop map.

not available now in Iran 😞

Level 10

It would be great to have filters which edits I will approve.

Eg I like to  check edits about contact information, so I'll set this filter and will check only this kind of edits.

@Pea asked an interesting question

###

Some of the listings I'm being asked to verify say, for example "Is this place permanently closed?" with three options:

###

Even though Windows gives more screen space I think the  'fourth option and/or a field to add notes' would be unnecessary screen clutter and keystrokes.

But if people are more content to explictly respond "Never Existed" it only requires a couple of extra keystrokes:

Click the name of the place

Click suggest an edit amd you will then have the option  "Place is permanently closed or has never existed"

Another click expands the never existed option still further

Permantly Closed

Never Existed

(yes, I do get if the place stays on the map but marked Permanently Closed.it could be considered an incorrect edit - but for most end users I think the edit will be useful)

@KahaleI

When it is available for you it should show up just under the "add your photos to Maps" item.

Great to see that this works for GSuite Level 5 Guides too!

Great update and new way to contribute to the local details of my area!

Level4 user can also use this feature. Check this fact!

Level 4 Local Guides can use "Check the facts".Level 4 Local Guides can use "Check the facts".

"情報の確認" means "Check the facts" in Japanese. And my comminity member also comfirmed the "fact".

Great news, excited to explore and add value to our world.

Level 9

Hi @Corrie,

Screen Shot 2017-03-19 at 7.33.10 PM.pngThank you for this news. This is very helpful to prevent spam edits. I am just curious if there's an action that we can do if a person keeps on spamming the details of a business. Here is an example, I saw this 'condoinbgc.com' website edits. And it seems like this person is editing all nearby business to promote their company. I know that we can just use this feature to reject their edits but what if a local guide already reached level 5. I guess he can also approve that edits (Correct me if I'm wrong). Is there a possibility to identify the person who is editing a place, so I can take action on reporting them?

Level 7

This is really helpful. Thanks for the update.

Level 8

Thank you,

"Mission" worked great for me today. I confirmed information, reviewed and added photos to two locations that mission opened for me. I also added one missing place.

I can do this on desktop, and I just started checking facts. I also just updated the iOS app (I use an iPhone SE) and this option was supposed to be added, but I can't see it. Has anybody used it at the app?

Great feature!

We are going to earn Local Guides points for the facts checked?

Level 10

Hi team,

As I understand, we can moderate changes of existing features only. What about new listings?

Level 8

Hello @Corrie , @LuisR ,  @GusM  we can not use in Turkiye. What is the reason?
The fixes we have made as local guides have not been approved for 3-4 months and appear to be Waiting.

@ErdoganAktas Different countries have different restrictions and processes, but I will look into this and get back to you.

Level 8

This is a big country and there are lots of local guides, we are closely following the technology. New local businesses are opening and closing too much. Keeping this information up-to-date is important. I am here to guide these local guides here, I encourage this work. However, if the regulations are correct, they are not approved or are on hold. Local Guides do not know what to do here.

Использовал  миссии для Google Maps на Android устройств в Бета версии .Очень удобная функция помогает наполнять объекты недостающей информацией.Хорошо что добавили функционал для модерации .Считаю это удачным решением которое поможет уменьшить количество ошибок.

It is really missing a "Comments" field.

It is not a good practice to deny an edit with "NO" without telling the user why or what is wrong.

Level 8

@JoeMart, you are absolutely right, that was a useful tool and it would be awesome to have it here also!

I contributed in google map by using this feature.

Hi @Corrie

Beginning of this new progress, we can not moderate in turkey, except out of turkey. So, please can u investigate this issue. Zoom in to turkey, you'll see what we are talking about. This is kinda unnerving situation. Help us please 😞

Hello @Corrie

When will the map edits in Turkey be opened? There are so many new and closed businesses in Turkey.

@TalhaDurmus @ErdoganAktas  👍

Level 9

I’am a local guide level 5 and Google Trusted Photographer. Google maps application doesn’t allow me and the other LGs to use “check the facts” for Turkey. But we can use “check the facts” for all other countries except Turkey. This situation reduces our motivation. I wonder why we are not allowed to use “check the facts”. What must I do to use “check the facts” section for my country Turkey? Thanks. @CorrieScreenshot_20170404-233229.jpg
