Early access: Save lists of places in Google Maps

Former Google Contributor

UPDATE: Starting January 4, 2017, this feature is now rolling out to Level 2+ Local Guides on Android and iOS.

UPDATE: Starting November 8, 2016, this feature is now rolling out to Level 3+ Local Guides on Android.

Go beyond stars when saving your places — soon you’ll be able to organize your places into special lists such as Favorites and Want to Go, or save custom lists all on your own, like:

  • Best burgers in Manhattan
  • July 2017 trip to Mexico City
  • Places to take mom and dad when they visit

We’re rolling out lists to Level 4+ Local Guides on Google Maps for Android over the next week — months before we launch to the public. If you're a Level 4 Local Guide, give it a try, and don't forget to shake to give feedback. You'll need to have the latest version of Google Maps for Android installed.

See how lists work in this video:

How to create lists of places

  1. Make sure you have the latest version of Google Maps for Android
  2. Open the app and make sure you're signed into your Google account
  3. Search for a place or tap it on the map
  4. At the bottom of the screen, tap the place's name or address
  5. Tap Save
  6. Select the list where you’d like to save the place

How to access your lists of places

  1. Make sure you have the latest version of Google Maps for Android
  2. Open the app and make sure you're signed into your Google account

Is there a reason I still don't see this feature?

I joined the Beta program and have 9.37.0 installed, don't see the feature though...

Level 8

This feature does not work for me. I'm level 5, the latest version of maps 9.37.0 (937002020).
Is it because I'm using GoogleApps for free account instead of gmail ?

Atom

I'm a Level 5 and am running version 9.36.2 on a Samsung S7. I am not seeing this feature either.

Level 7

Nice! When will it be available for IOS?

Level 7

This feature is really good i like it.

Level 7

Usefull .

Level 7

No idea when will it be available for iOS?

Level 4

Hmmm. Well, it was working, but now suddenly the feature is missing.

Level 7

thats realy great . .

Level 5

Another wonderful reason to aim at Level 4!

Level 4

Make sense to me. Now I can mark my favorite spots for recreation and mostly for work. It has been a great help and convenience.

Level 4

I love this! What a great idea!

Level 3

This is great news, I do a lot of travel with my job so would like to have a list of all the company addresses I visit. Look forward to it launching.

Awesome! good job "localguide software support team" , I wanted to have a list to make a combination of places that sells flowers, gifts , cholocates, cakes etc. and this feature just made my day!

It will be good if I can share this list with someone 🙂

keep up the good work!

regards

I love it! Thanks! Took photos today, need to upload and share!

I have a huge list of places, from Babyland General in Cleveland, GA, home and birth place of the Cabbage Patch dolls, BlueRidge Mountains, Appalachian trail, Anderson, GA, interesting historical significance and about 150 other places! I'm excited about it. I can't wait to share and due to having to pick up new phone tomorrow I'll be interested in speaking to a moderator soon to host an event in Atlanta, GA! My Best, Ms Jeanny

Level 4

Very useful feature indeed. Just wish it worked.

I have 800 saved places (starred places) on Google Maps. However, after this feature has been implemented Google Maps only shows 506 places. I can see all placed on a PC with Google Chrome.

Level 10

Nice feature

TAHA
Level 6

it would be great if this feature was available on all platforms. I prefer to participate in the community via the web and my PC/laptop.

Level 5

Google map thật tuyệt vời , với chức năng này tôi sẽ lên được kế hoạch rõ ràng hơn cho mình và hướng dẫn những người bạn của tôi tốt hơn nữa.

Level 3

Can't wait until I'm Level 4 so I can get this feature 😄

Level 6
@EmilyC: I know what you mean! 🙂
Level 7

I'm Level 5 and still missing out on that feature. Why?

Level 3

Oh, thank god you figured it out before I could formulate the words to ask for it. We could have been waiting for a while.

And now that I know about it, I can finally formulate the words.

I'd been looking for a way to organise places into different areas of my life. Different facets of me. For example there's the camping me. There's the Sci-Fi nerd me, the tech/science nerd me, the dammit-I-need-coffee me, the let's-get-drunk me and the rest of me.

Labels just wasn't cutting it for me and as a result I wasn't really using saved places. Now I feel like I might be able to create maps for each community I'm involved in because they'd almost be pre-created under each places list. I could be talking to a fellow let's-get-drunk person and show them all my places under that list and then turn it into a map and share it.

Level 8

@individual8 can you check:  1.  You are using Andorid Maps.  2.  Uninstall and reinstall Maps from your mobile.

If feature still missing after that, please tag our Moderators so that they can further look into your issue.

Level 7

@YK1001 Can't uninstall Google Maps, it's a system app on Nexus devices.

I may add that I'm a beta user of the app and using it w/ my G Suite user account. Any ideas, @Corrie?

Former Google Contributor

@individual8 ah, its most likely due to your G-Suites account. Beta features typically don't roll out for those kinds of accounts due to risk of things breaking for enterprise clients.

Level 8

Yes.  G-Suites accont normally do not have access.

@individual8, the aim is to clear cached data.  If  familar with the Mobile OS operations, then directly clear the cache is worth trying.  (It will filter out issues due to the Mobile end.)

Normally uninstall the latest version (revert back to "bundled" version), reinstall will have the same effect.  And is normally easier for non-technie mobile users to do.

Level 7

@Corrie That's frustrating since it was never communicated that G Suite (former Google Apps) accounts won't have the same benefits, otherwise I'd have considered using my Gmail account.

Level 3

Hi @CorrieD

I do not see the feature in my Google Maps 😞

I am Level 3

Resitall Google maps.

Same issue..

Best.

Level 3

Let me see if I can do it yet!

Level 3

The Uninstall/reinstall process worked for me.

Level 5

Very useful. I used to put stars everywhere before I got this feature, so my map is now full of "starred" places that should actually be "favorites". It's a mess for me now, Google, but I love you anyway.

Level 8

Great job and very useful new features. Also the integration of Google My Maps within Google Maps is a really nice add-on. It would be great to see My Maps further enhanced within Google Maps

Level 8

Great and helpful feature! It would be perfect if I can set for created custom lists different colors or icons.

This feature seems great!, I can't wait to use in my furutre trips! 😄

Level 2

شكرا لكم على تحسين قوقل ماب.

Level 6

This is an excellent feature I was waiting for. 🙂

Level 9

Hi @Corrie  i m in level 5.  Great and very helpful,Useful feature. It would be perfect for Google Map

Thanks

Level 6

this feature makes planing before hand very easy..dont have to scroll down on Map if you have already saved.

Level 6

The way to remove a saved place from a list is not intuitive. Since there's no button or link that says "remove item from list" or something, the users should be able to figure out that tapping on the item again will undo (remove) the item from the list: an initial instruction or initial help text can be helpful to educate the users about this operation.

When you introduce a new user interaction flow that is not a common practice, at least make an introductory screen (floating help text) that introduces this operation. I mean, users already know that a button or a link can be tapped, a hamburger menu reveals options, lists can be scroll, and so on. But who already knows that a list item can be tapped to remove it? Don't make the users be puzzled and make them think they're idiots who can't use a smart phone.

Level 3
How do I know if I have this feature in Google Maps?

Hi @MartinK,

Goto Your Places-Saved.  If you see the above default lists, then you have this new feature.

Level 9
  • @Corrie That's frustrating since it was never communicated that G Suite (former Google Apps) accounts won't have the same benefits, otherwise I'd have considered using my Gmail account.

I agree with @individual8. It's very frustrating it.

I am level 5, with lots of information/photos published, and I can not enjoy the benefits. If they had previously reported, I would have started the Local Guide with my Gmail account...

Please, Could someone tell me if it is possible to transfer my score/benefits to a Gmail account?

Thank you very much

Former Google Contributor

@Escossia Unfortunately we cannot transfer points between accounts. Benefits vary by level, country, device type, etc. We will continue roll out benefits to Local Guides as we develop them.

Level 8

Hi @Corrie,

Just got email, iOS + Level 4+ will got the Saved Lists feature.

Level 3
"Hi @MartinKadiev, Goto Your Places-Saved. If you see the above default lists, then you have this new feature." Yes, thanks that worked!
Level 4

Hmmmmm.. please tell me this will work for Google Apps users!!! :))
