Early access: Save lists of places in Google Maps

Former Google Contributor

UPDATE: Starting January 4, 2017, this feature is now rolling out to Level 2+ Local Guides on Android and iOS.

UPDATE: Starting November 8, 2016, this feature is now rolling out to Level 3+ Local Guides on Android.

Go beyond stars when saving your places — soon you’ll be able to organize your places into special lists such as Favorites and Want to Go, or save custom lists all on your own, like:

  • Best burgers in Manhattan
  • July 2017 trip to Mexico City
  • Places to take mom and dad when they visit

We’re rolling out lists to Level 4+ Local Guides on Google Maps for Android over the next week — months before we launch to the public. If you're a Level 4 Local Guide, give it a try, and don't forget to shake to give feedback. You'll need to have the latest version of Google Maps for Android installed.

See how lists work in this video:

How to create lists of places

  1. Make sure you have the latest version of Google Maps for Android
  2. Open the app and make sure you're signed into your Google account
  3. Search for a place or tap it on the map
  4. At the bottom of the screen, tap the place's name or address
  5. Tap Save
  6. Select the list where you’d like to save the place

How to access your lists of places

  1. Make sure you have the latest version of Google Maps for Android
  2. Open the app and make sure you're signed into your Google account
  3. Tap the menu
  4. Tap Your places
  5. Your lists of places will appear under the Saved tab

This is a very useful feature!  I have been 'saving' local points of interest to share with family and friends that visit the area.  But until now I had no way to separate San Francisco POIs from San Jose POIs, or between my recommendations for others and my own personal favorites.

I opened up Maps and ensured I have the latest version, but this new feature doesn't seem to be available yet.  After step 5 above, no lists appear for selection.  Do you know whether this feature will take a little while to roll out?

Former Google Contributor

@KeithA Yes, this started rolling out today so you may not have it until tomorrow. We are excited to learn how you use the feature thought, what you like about it, and what we can improve!

Awesome! That's exactly what I've been asking for 😍 The only thing I'm missing now is a notification for when I'm near a place from the "want to go" list. Otherwise an awesome update, thank you!

This is an excellent feature I was waiting for.

I've just created a new list for my next trip, it's simple and efficient!

Good job Local Guides ans Maps teams!

Useful and most appreciated.

Now it just needs sharing and collaboration. That way I could make a list with my wife of places to visit on vacations. I know it's possible with Google Drive to create a shared Map "file" but it doesn't work good offline.

Level 8

Two quick findings:

1.  New feature starts with version 9.36.0 of Android Maps

2.  For Maps versions not supporting this Save lists feature, they can only see the "Starred places" list

Don't worry, this new feature supports putting a Place into multiple lists.

To make all your saved places accessible across Desktop Maps / iOS Maps and Android Maps, always put your Saved Places into the "Starred places" as well.

Excellent news. Just testing.
Congratulations to the team.
Cheers

Are this features replacing MyMaps? It's a very fast way, but I miss sharing and saving a list. If you keep MyMaps, what about to export a list to it?

Great news,  like organization.

This will be an helpful tool especially for those "organized" travelers (smiles).  Thanks Google, awesome job!!

Sounds like a great new feature. Thanks to the team.

Level 8

Amazing feature!

Starred places needed to be categorized!

Hopefully, sharing option will be added soon! As well as, conditional reminders like location-based or time-based (already available in Google Keep).

Great job!

Level 8

Few questions about the labels.

I used many of them because I sometimes really could not recall why I added a star to a place but labeling could work the wonders. Now they seem to be segragated under thier own menu, what will happen to them?

Will they be integrated in this new feature or soon will be removed?

This is a very useful feature ! already tried out n created few lists n added places !

wish we could have shar our lists with atleast one person ( probably with partner ? )

anyway great job !  appreciate everyone's hard work for this

Level 10

@Corrie Great feature but I was wondering if those lists are private or they can be public so if someone is viewing my profile, he can access my public lists like top 10 burger shop in my town or my recommended resto in Beirut for example, etc...

Level 10

Nice! I can't wait to see. I always used MyMaps to organize places (ie http://maps.virzi.it) , but this will be more useful for everyone!

Former Google Contributor

@MichelChammas  @LudwigGermany EDIT: My mistake! Lists are still only private. We care a lot about sharing and publishing too, so will continue to evolve and improve all of Google Maps to deliver great functionality. Remember, this is early access to a feature still under development.

Level 10

@Corrie How? is it the "Hide on your map" bottom?

Connect Moderator

I don't find an option to choose private or public.

@LudwigGermany,

Sharing of saved lists are planned features, which is not in this release.  Thus options for public and private are not there yet.

Level 8

Seeing the lists rolling out, I came to wonder why this wasn't implemented earlier. I've been raging about this lack for ages.

That, and the fact the contact app didn't manage groups (until very recently).

And all this came out in the same week.

Should have wished for a load of money...

Love it, just wish it had been available for my recent trip. Will be great when it has sharing with friends and family and alerts when you are near somewhere. Great to have early access.

Level 8

Could you add a way to change the icon for list ? (custom option), in the same idea that logo with home and work adress ^^

I'm plusing (from the made up verb to plus) @AlexNEO's motion.

Level 8

Great, but... in desktop Map I see one list "starred places". I think, that synchronization application and desktop version is required and expected.

From what version of Google Maps is this feature enabled?
I am a local guide level 5

Using a Nexus 6P with Android 7.0 Nougat.

My Google maps version is : 9.33.1

I do not see it available or enabled on my Maps app on Android.

Or, is this a geo-restricted feature ? ...if so, then it is not yet available in Mexico, where I am at the moment.
Or, is the beta version of Maps required for this feature to be enabled?  (besides being a local guide level 4 at minimum)

Thanks for your comments

Hi @febb,

This one starts with Android Maps v9.36.  Please see my comment above or my reply at the L4+ board here.

Hi @YK1001 :

Thanks for your comment and reply.

So, it is now just a matter of waiting Google to push out a recent version of maps to my phone... Curiously enough, despite having a  nexus 6P with Android 7.0 Nougat,  lots of apps I do have running are still older versions.  My maps is 9.33.1  !   and you are talking about 9.36....    !  Oh well, lets wait, I guess there nothing else much to do...

Thanks again.

@YK1001, mostly, yes.

You can force the update by uninstalling the Play Store updates, so is said (not the Play Store app itself, just the map app).

Or is an alternate source like apkmirror, at your own risks .

But that's strange, having a 6p too, updates are pushed within the weeks of their release and I live in France (famous for being " among the last ones served").

This is a very usefull feature ,this is a very good ,perfect ,like share and join now ,

Level 8

@YK1001

I have tried uninstalling the apps (those who are not updated regualry) from the phone, such as maps in this case.  It turns that, if I uninstall all maps updates, either I do not get any new updates from the Play Store  or, at the most, I do get the 9.33.1 "old" update I had previously uninstalled.

If I do enable myself as beta tester, I do get the 9.36.2 version.   But, that is a "beta"...with whatever implications it has being a beta quality app.

I do see some features enabled on the desktop version, such as the EDIT tab on "My contributions",  but not in the Android app.  So, definitely it is a problem with the app version,  not with my status as a level 5 local guide.

Thanks again for your comments.

@YK1001, yep, sorry, you're right 😄

6am at the time, I misread the name (or the entire post) ^^

Level 4

Any plans to roll this out early for iPhones?

Level 8

@JMN.  No problem.  Been there, done that.

It is an universal truth that LGs sacrifice sleeps to improve Maps.

Really useful feature to have and fingers crossed it'll be expanded to include sharing and even notifications when one is near a saved place (user can toggle this on/off depending on what list he/she is interested to be notifed by). Would be even more thrilled if the roll out included the desktop version as well. @YK1001 suggested including saved places in the Starred Places list as well so that it appears across all the other platforms but it'll be frustrating removing them one by one when this feature gets released fully.

This is a very useful feature, I have to say it after a week using it. I always had to save a list of places a want to go based on my friends' suggestion or my favourite places somewhere else, sometimes as a note in Google Keep. This new released feature does exactly what I need.

Level 7

Great news, an awesome functionality !!!

Any project to add the capability to share the list with other users?

Level 7

I love this feature! I have a lot of saved places and now I can organize them! 😄

Thank you very much Google, I follow Google Local Guides since its release and it's awesome, like you! 😉

Level 4

Yes, like it. Bit of a hassle to organise lists on a phone. Can't wait to do it on PC

Level 7

That's a great feature, hope it can be soon released on iOS.

Level 8

Very useful feature. It can also be used to add new places to save mobile data or if data network is slow. Take photo of place, note details. Then, drop a location pin  of the new place to be added on the map. Give it a name. Create a new list. Later, add places when you are on wifi.

You can be creative in using the lists. Really useful.
