Be the first to share video on Google Maps

Google Administrator

As a Local Guide, you know that photos have the power to help people see the world and make decisions about where to go. But there’s a lot you can learn about a place by seeing it in motion. That’s why we’re introducing video on Google Maps.

Today, Local Guides on Android have the chance to add the first-ever videos to millions of places. The possibilities are really exciting: Take viewers on a mini tour of a store you love, or show the bustling scene at your favorite neighborhood restaurant. You can even do a quick review where you showcase a place’s best item or offer tips for visitors. (More inspiration: How to create videos that stand out on Google Maps.)

If you’re a Local Guide on Android, you can get started right now.

How to create a video when you’re at a place:

  • Search and select a place on Google Maps
  • Scroll down and tap “Add a photo”
  • Tap “Camera” and hold the shutter button for up to 10 seconds

How to upload a video you’ve already shot:

  • Search and select a place on Google Maps
  • Scroll down and tap “Add a photo”
  • Tap “Folder” and select a video. Only the first 30 seconds of a video can be added.

Visit the Help Center to learn more about sharing videos.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use this feature on my desktop computer or iOS device?

Right now, you can see videos on Google Search results for places in a web browser, but you can only upload videos on Google Maps for Android.

Why can’t I see this feature on my Android device?

If you’re a Local Guide and you can’t see or upload video on your Android device, try again shortly. The feature is rolling out gradually, and you may not be able to use it immediately.

Do videos earn Local Guides points?

You get 7 points for each video you upload.

Thanks @MegS! Looking forward to adding some more videos and seeing what the points update is.

@BenKlein and I were doing some uploading and found sometimes it is 5 points and sometimes it is 7, so we'll await for the updates on points.

Any particular policies beyond the ones listed here? Could people potentially go to businesses and interview business owners for a brief 30 seconds? Though this would be considered promotional...

One other comment... when viewing videos on Android or desktop Maps, is there another section or is there a particular way of organizing it? I added a video for Voodoo Doughnuts and @KimberlyAnnG and I couldn't find it...

Thanks! :)

Very excited to use my Google Glass to get all the video for my favorite places 😀

It appears that you can also initiated a video upload to Maps from within Google Photos.  🤩

Google Maps is uniquely positioned at the top of the summit. This is amazing feature.

Thanks @Shirley @MegS

I am wondering if it is just my phone? I am using a Non-Stock Camera App (Camera MX with Live Photo Capability), with Oxygen OS instead of Android (One Plus spare phone while I wait for Pixel XL)

I will do some more tests but what seemed to happen is one of my videos was recognized as a photo. However I can "play" it from Google Maps.

Level 9

@MegS thanks for your info, really good to know,... ;-) I'll talk about this option to my customers in Belgium and Europe! It' s interresting to know how to performe with this and keep nice and pro quality.

Can we upload 360° video?

Is there a maximum height, HD or 2 or 4 or 8 K?

See you

Level 8

Love this update - fantastic addition. Thanks @MegS!

Level 9

Already saw it @tashantamim. I am iOS user but tomorrow my new Android is coming and I will be able to contribute even more with my new device. Looking forward to test this and many other features which are available only on Android devices. Anyway thanks for tagging me, much appreciated. 👍🙌

Sounds great @MegS will the videos go into our drive storage quota?

Connect Moderator

Hi @MegS,

Thank you very much for informing this great feature.

We have been reading the excitement of the beta testers for a long time and finally it is coming to all Android users.

Are there any places that already have video uploaded, let us know, so that we can see how they'll look like in Android Maps and Google Search?

@Shirley, can you share the place having your video to us?

Connect Moderator

@SampsonF: I've shared two so far.

1. Voodoo Doughnuts:

2. Cannon Beach:

However, they both have well over 200+ photos already, so I have trouble finding my video, which is why I had asked if there'll be a particular way of the videos being organized.

I do see them in my contributions found here but on mobile only.  I don't see the videos at all on my contributions tab on desktop maps. @MegS should it be like that on desktop?

Level 8

This is awesome! I have over 5000 Google Glass photos and videos since 2008 of our travels. I added my first one here:

Shows up on Android, but not desktop yet. Great new feature!

Connect Moderator

Thank you @Shirley.  Yes  it is hard to  locate your video, and I didn't, as I don't know what I am looking for.

Connect Moderator

I located your video, @AubreyB!

Thank you very much!  Now I know what I am looking for.

Maps will auto play the video while I am browsing through the photos.

That should be the reason why I got lots of grey boxes when looking  for  @Shirley videos.  They need time to load so my phone or my network is just too slow.

I can see an option to stop auto play of videos is needed in Maps.

Level 9

I'm using the feature and have already shared some videos with less than 30 seconds.
Some users already see it, it is a very useful tool.

It's good to be able to share this content.

Connect Moderator

Hi @Shirley,

I browse the Donut shop's photo from top to bottom, and back from bottom to top, I did not have any moving video shown.  May be it will take more time to got added to the Place.  How long did you added it?

From @AubreyB's video, I can confirm the video is not listed at Desktop Maps - but it DID got listed in Google Search Result using Desktop browser.

Funny it seems Google Search is recieving a lot of Maps enhancements even ahead of Desktop Maps.

Level 8

I love this Feature @MegS , thanks for updating , the map now will be more life able 😊😊😊

Connect Moderator

Hey @SampsonF

Were you able to see it from my contributions link??

I can see it from there on mobile.  I need to find a place that has less photos and try again.

Connect Moderator

I got stucked, @Shirley.

When I click on your Maps profile, it is opened in my Android Chrome.  As only Android Maps can show the videos, … , I need to find a way.

Is this photo you added with your video? Captured in ChromeScreenshot_20170826-123440.png

Connect Moderator

@SampsonF: I added a photo and a video for Voodoo Doughnuts.  This is the screenshot when I load up my contributions on my Android.

Hopefuly the LG team can implement a tab on contributions perhaps specific for videos so it comes up easily.

Thanks for sharing this useful information @MegS

Level 10

@MegS should these videos be saved in our mobile phone ?

If we delete the videos after uploading them in maps, then will they get deleted from maps ?

Level 10

@SampsonF and @Shirley - can u plz help with my querry:

should these videos be saved in our mobile phone ?

If we delete the videos from mobile phone after uploading them in maps, then will they get deleted from maps ?

Connect Moderator

@DanielTh: I know if your Android device backs up photos to Google drive (free or full size versions) and those photos were deleted from your Google drive, they'll get removed from maps.  This would ultimately mean that you'll lose your points as well.  I suspect the same would happen for videos.  However, if you're deleting them from your phone's actual memory, then I don't think it would be removed.

Connect Moderator

I will do some test soon.  @DanielTh.

Level 7

Great! Now we just need Gif support!

Wow @MegS it's a great feature for all business. Thanks for sharing this amazing information.

Level 8

Very cool! I can't wait to give it a go.

Level 4

This is fantastic! Thank you so much for sharing!

Level 9

It's a good feature, and I think this would be more famous then 360-degree photos.

Thanks @MegS for news and instructions.

Level 10

I've uploaded 2 or 3 videos so far. As someone else has said, it's really hard to find videos amongst all the other pics. I suppose the UI changes will be coming out bit by bit. So far the points display has started to show a separate line item for videos at 7 points each.

Interested to see how much importance videos will get. In fact I think better not publicize it too much until people figure out what kind of videos to submit. Right now the format is very fresh and uncertain. Example for Q&A, I am seeing many poorly typed and bizarre questions which cannot be answered.

Naturally videos also beg the question of how will storage space and data usage be managed and limited. I think there hasn't been enough clarity in this. Photos was already a huge storage and data expense, now videos. If it will be stored for free, and doesn't interfere with out Google Photos etc, I think that should be made clearer in an FAQ somewhere. The average joe who uploads 100 photos won't see much of an impact but LGs who really active and have thousands of uploads have cause for concern.

Level 9

Already added few videos. This is a cool feature. I can not find the videos I uploaded under photos. @MegS Will there be a separate tab for video?

Interesting new feature.

Level 8

@MegS Love this. I can't wait for iOS feature.

Level 9

@MegS thank you very much for share.  It's just cool feature.

Level 8

This is very good! @MegS

Level 10

Added a dozen of videos so far. A little difficult to find them.

Also, noticed are not showing up on desktop.

I hope the integration will be completed asap!

Level 8

Love the idea and look forward to adding videos. However, do have reservations about the quality of videos that will be added.

Level 7

@MegS Hi Meg, excellent feature, thanks! It would make the content on Google Maps even better and even more useful.

Another great thing about this feature that it was suggested quite a few times here on LG Connect. Here is at least 2 examples by @MichelChammas and @AjinkyaThakare

It would be cool if Local Guides who suggested and contributed to the implemented ideas like this one are called out. This would make LG Connect even more powerful community.
