What are the differences between Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality?

With special reference to Google Maps, what are the differences between Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR)?

VR photos are "just" photos that you can browse on a 360° base (both vertically and horizontally). And that's pretty much it. 😉

AR (Augmented Reality) can be applied to many different scenarios. If you think to a VR photo this can be done by adding some informations to that photo (enhancements).

To give you a simple but practical example of what you can do with AR in a VR photo.

You can mark a part of your photo with a "hotspot" and if you turn to that point of your photo some added informations appear. Imagine for example a VR photo of Paris and when you point to the direction of the Eiffel Tower a pop-up appears telling you: "Your are looking at the Eiffel Tower, which is 324 meters high and was built between 1887 and 1889." 

This is Augmented Reality!

Virtual reality creates its own reality that is completely computer generated and operated.Virtual Reality is used through a head-mounted, or hand-held controller. This equipments connect people to allows them to control and navigate their actions in an environment meant to simulate the real world.

Augmented reality is being used in mobile devices.
