Review Options on Google Maps.

Is it possible to add additional options when editing the Status of Places?

A place that I am currently contracted to do work at has temporally closed for renovations and will re open in 6 weeks, some one has edited this places status as "Permanently Closed" which is very damaging for bussiness.

Would it be possible to add a drop down box that could be filled in?

Thanks

I've been wondering the same thing about how to deal with this situation. I guess once the business is open again, it can be re-edited? Not the best solution I know..

Re: Review Options on Google Maps.

If Map Maker is available in your country, you can restore the 'permanently closed' listing

Link to the support article on the same - https://support.google.com/mapmaker/answer/1065792?hl=en

Ivan, when a search is conducted via maps and its listed as permanently closed, it indicates that it will not re-open

@GeorgeT You should be able to re-edit it as open using Map Maker like what @AmithES has mentioned.

Do you have a link to the location? We can probably help take a look.

Re: Review Options on Google Maps.

George,

You will only be allowed to mark it as re-opened using MapMaker when it actually does, please refer to the following guide:

What you may be able to do though, is see if the owner of the business can set special hours via Google My Business.

The following link has a guide to this: https://support.google.com/business/answer/6303076

That said, I do not have any experience of this first hand, so I am not sure if it will work using it for an extended period like this - you would need to check using the GMB forums located here: http://advertisercommunity.com/t5/Google-My-Business/ct-p/GMB

Not sure what else LGs can do, but if they have claimed their business: https://www.en.advertisercommunity.com/t5/Basics-for-Business-Owners/How-do-I-set-a-location-to-temp...

Re: Review Options on Google Maps.

Hello, Google???

I just spent 30 minutes each way walking to a business that is temporarily closed for renovations I then spent another 30 minutes trying to find a way of letting other google maps users know that they can save themselves the trip. I figure there are lots of unclaimed businesses out there and even the claimed ones may not always have someone who remembers to update the listing.

Google maps is only as helpful as the validity of its information. Yes, I know that I could try setting the place as permanently closed, but that’s overkill that will (NOT may!) harm the business. Also, I am in this city on a short two day trip and won’t be able to verify if the place really re-opens on the date mentioned in their shop window.

Google, please, please, for the sake of shop owners and users alike, allow for a ‚temporarily closed‘ setting with start and end dates.

Re: Review Options on Google Maps.

Hi @iyudhi@GeorgeT

You can mark a closed business as open (again) in Google Maps itself (US, I think also UK, but may vary by country as others noted). As a matter of fact, it is the only thing you can edit in the listing if it's closed. NB - you have to know the name of the business and search for it in GM as it does not display on GM if marked permanently closed.

However, this issue with the reasons (there are 6 possible current choices) that a place is being marked "closed" is more problematical than the type of temporary closures as mentioned by @GeorgeT.  I live part of the year in a resort town on the most popular and well known beach in the region. Extremely busy in summer, but dead and a ghost town in the winter. Most of the businesses close for the rest of the year at the end of the summer season and don't reopen until the following summer season, as do many popular tourist towns and areas around the world. So this issue of are they open or closed comes up all the time.

Theoretically, the clue is in the GM choice itself (first on the list) - is it "Permanently Closed"? Temporary closures for renovations or seasonal reasons do not quality as "Permanently Closed". Inevitably though, a GM contributor will mark it as permanently closed and we get this issue. An associated issue arises with a temporarily/seasonally closed businesses opening hours being wrong or missing if the listing says they are Open.

So in my opinion it's partly an education issue, but due to the problems with listing the opening hours of a temporarily closed business, I would agree that there should be a seventh reason for Seasonal/Temporary Closure which if selected and approved would automatically delete any opening hours on the listing, just like the Permanent Closed feature does. An alternate solution would be to have Temporary/Seasonal Closure as a choice in the Hours section of the Maps listing.

As one of the other Moderators likes to remind me, the best place to report issues like this with Google Maps is using the feedback feature in Google Maps itself. This insures the appropriate team is aware of the issue, and if enough Users provide the same feedback it is more likely that a solution will be found and implemented. Nice to know though that someone else shares my frustrations on this.
