Google's edit review is not fit for purpose

I don't know who or what is approving and rejecting edits but it needs fixing!!  I am sick to death of telling Google Maps things are in the wrong place, and when I submit an edit I am being rejected!!

If it is an automated process someone needs to look into fixing it.  If it is a human, they really need a good kick up the backside and use a bit of logic and reasoning when making decisions.

I have no info from Google on this, but I suspect edits have to be controlled by another local guide in your area using "Contribute" and "Check the facts" on the local guide contributions page. There aren't many other local guides where I live and I experience the same problem - no one else to check the edits I make.

But I don't think that is the whole story. I think some edits and additions are checked by computer algorithms or even by someone sitting in a low-cost country, doing the job.

As an experiment I have tried to change the Google Maps language when I edit or add to the map. If I'm unsuccessful adding something in Norwegian I try Spanish or English. Usually one of them works. Probably different controllers working with different languages.

... but as I said - this is just what I believe, and I may be completely wrong.  Would be nice if someone from Google could have a say here.

After writing this I found this official answer from Google. Have a look!

Re: Google's edit review is not fit for purpose

This is a frequently discussed topic.  If you take time to read some existing threads, easily, you can come to your own conclusion.

This is my understand:

1.  Edit Submitted

2.  Auto Approval Process, this is done immediately after edit is submitted

- possible out:  approved, rejected, pending

3.  If Auto Approval Result is pending

- This is a big black box.  What is happening here is anyone's guess.  Likely a combination of below:

* Review by Human

* Pass to Check the Facts

4.  Final result:  Approved or Rejected

Re: Google's edit review is not fit for purpose

Strange that the majority of my edits which are subjected to "review" are rejected without any reason for doing so.

I give up!!

Dear @Anonymous

I am trying to help you here, but you need to ask yourself "How do you know there is no reason for your suggested edits being rejected?"

I can assure you, there is always a reason, but it could be a reason you do not like, such as Google is unable to verify your edit and you do not have enough trust score for the edits to be accepted.

If you research this forum, you will learn there are different reasons that could result in the infamous Not Applied result. I just started making an inventory of theoretical reasons why people do get a Not Applied response I am currently at 12 reasons and still counting.

To get an answer why YOUR suggested edits have not been accepted, you need to give full detailed information (a link to the place on map and full info on what you filled out in the blanks when submitting your edit) in this Mapping your World forum and people like Flash will be happy to analyze your case and give you suggestions.

Please don't give up, persist in finding out why and you will become a better Map Editor and get more satisfaction from your Local Guides contributions.

Re: Google's edit review is not fit for purpose

Oh and here are a few purely stupid POI which are clearly not in the correct location, but Google is still "reviewing" them.

1) https://goo.gl/maps/BxgUs5YeCfu - Holiday cottages located in the middle of a roundabout.  Nice place to spend a few days dodging traffic and taking in the views.

2) https://goo.gl/maps/eL6nr4FUbBm - Convenience store at it's best for when cows and sheep want a bottle of milk or the daily newspaper

3) https://goo.gl/maps/EyULbBB3BeG2 - Open air school, so the children can learn in the wind and rain.

4) https://goo.gl/maps/FyEKcjMG8cN2 - The Credit Union, so the cows and sheep can save their hard earned cash and maybe take out a loan for something nice.

5) https://goo.gl/maps/BvGp2Zh7WKs - The football club 40 miles away from it's actual location, but Google is directing people to a swamp/bogland.  I have made an edit to move it to its correct position, but Google needs to "review" the edit, because a big sign saying "Home of Lisbellaw FC" isn't enough for them - https://goo.gl/maps/3NJ1VvTbHD22

@JeroenM

I spent considerable time on a post detailing 10 examples of rejected edits to the map, but the post was deleted by the moderators or by some kind of faulty forum software.  I am done wasting my time on here.
